C'mon Keith, something this revolutionary just isn't offered by any other camera manufacturer.

Quote: Poor old Canon user's, having to put up with just 10.1 Megapixels in Canons new offering

Lets see how that 12MP sensor handels the noise before writing off the Canon.
And how much difference will the extra 2MP make anyway?

Quote: Yipee the New D300, should put pressure on Canon to pull the 5D price down (Lives in hope).

The D300 is more of a competetor to the 40D then the 5D.
If I was Nikon, I would have given the D300 the same full frame sensor from the D3 - that would really have given the 5D some competition!

But for those that the D3 is aimed at, do they care? The D2X is used in 2x crop mode as it is cos for press they don't need the large files and the 2x zoom is useful. I understand the difference needed for D3X and D300, but not for this. I obviously don't understand the market well enough.

And one is built like a tank and the other is not.

Not really, you are better off having a larger image an crop it later. The real reason for the 2x crop was to get a fast frame rate, something they seem to have solved with the D3

I was thinking poor old Nikon users having to pay $500 more for what may to all intents be identical perfomance. Remember the 30D and D200 are not far apart in terms of images produced, as usual there being conditions where one is better than the other.

Till the cameras are actualy out it is hard to tell, but I would doubt the 10mp to 12MP difference will be big. And not having ISO100 would bug me Smile

Really? The 40D looks more like a competitor to the D200 and it probably isn't even worth upgrading from the 30D because, as Strawman is fond of saying, the difference between 8 and 10mpx isn't that big.

Well I have been looking for a new camera for some time now and as I have all Nikon kit I think I might get the D300. Just had a look at the spec and it seems to fit my requirements. Buying the cam is O.K. it`s all the extra add-ons that break the bank. I am quite happy with my S3 (D200 in disguise) but find it slow at times.
    Thanks for the advise.

I expect the 200D will be dead soon, it is too close in price to the D80 and I wonder if it is profitable at its current price.

Then you get into where each has its strength. The 5D is more about ultimate image quality over speed of response and so although the MP are the same the full frame sensor plus ISO50 etc should give it a clear advantage in some areas, and a loss in others. The 300D offers faster frame rates etc.

Think of it more that the company do not offer directly equivalent products. D300 and 40D, are offering equivalent frame rates. If like past models they offer very similar picture quality.
So more feature Nikon but more cost.
