    Hello everyone,

I am currently looking around for a lens upgrade for my Nikon D80 and hoped I could get some advice as to a choice of lens. I have a wide range of interests but I am particularly looking to develop my landscape photography and therefore feel a good quality wide-angle lens should be my next investment.

The two lenses which seem to stand out are Nikon's 12-24mm f.4 and the 14-24mm f.2.8. I wondered if anyone had experience of these lenses, how they compare against one another, and particularly whether the 14-24mm is worth the extra cost (roughly over £400)?

If anyone has any alternative suggestions they would be most appreciated.

    Thanks.

Hi, hoping I can help with this. Have you considered the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8?

From what I have read it is rated as (or even more) highly than the Nikkor and at £450 has to be worth a look. It is on my list of future purchases!

The 12-24 Nikon is a superb lens, There are cheaper 12 - 24 mm lens on the market.....But they don't compare with the Nikon, Except for price......!

The 14 - 24 Nikon is an amasing lens, It's superior to the Nikon 12 - 24........But at a price.....!

IF you can see 500 quids worth of difference in a landscape, Then the 14 - 24 is the only way to go.....! But your gonna have to look real hard......Sad

ON the other hand the Nikon 12 - 24 is a DX lens, Designed for the APC sensor format.....Where as the 14- 24 is an FX ( Full Frame ) lens.......SO that might be a consideration, Should you upgrade to a D3 or what ever, In a few years time......!

So Why not Google the reviews between all the lens in this focal range........Then make an informed decision that suits....!

I'll add my voice to that. Great quality at a superb price.

Yet another vote for the Sigma 10-20.

The 14-24 may well be a great lens, but it won't take filters due to the large front element which would be a major downside for me on landscapes as I coudln't put my ND grads on the front.

Cokin X Pro solves the problem ....

Thanks to everyone for the replies so far and particularly for the Sigma tip. I hadn't considered some of the third-party/non-nikon lenses but I have had a look at the 10-20mm and the reviews that I have found all seem positive especially considering it is around half the price of the Nikkor 12-24mm.

May I ask whether those who have recommended the Sigma would choose it over the Nikkor 12-24mm irrespective of the difference in price (my budget would allow for the extra cost of the Nikkor if necessary).

    Thanks.

Yes! There is little difference in image quality, certainly none that could be discerned by eye, and the build quality is pretty near as good. The extra 2mm at the wide end also makes a considerable diference at those sort of focal lengths.

hi, i use a 12-24 nikkor much of the time, little or no distotion, 1/4 turn focus max, ab fab lens with no comparison to alternatives, the build quality says it all. razor sharp at all settings and i cant speak highly enough about it, the 14 mm has extra special optics but i can say for sure i dont know how the image quality could be improved, and for me i would sooner have the 2mm at the front end for landscapes, and cash for something else. i think the 14 would be too much of a compromise. The sigma 10-20 is a fine lens as is the sigma 12-24 which is better but has a huge front element eith no filter thread, my friend bought the Tamron and regrets it, but i tried them all and shelled out.never regretted it.
    all the best,
    Phil
