    Hi everyone,

I need a lens for Nikon Dslr so I could shoot in the low light action (mainly dance performances and also lifestyle indoor portaits of kids who don't sit still a lot) without a flash.

At the moment i use a couple of fixed lenses - I have nikon 50mm f1.8 and 28mm f/2.8 but it's a hassle changing them at times; plus the 50mm is sometimes a bit too narrow angled for group shots although f/1.8 allows sharper shots. I have been thinking about Nikon's 18-200 VR for a while as a good all-rounder but heard that VR lenses are only suitable for still shots not moving subjects and the f number also changes which is not ideal as I will be needing 2.8 most of the time.

Budget-wise, need something reasonable - something like nikon's 17-55 f/2.8 is a bit over the top for me.

Any comments/ideas/tips would be much appreciated.

    Many thanks in advance!
    Olesya

Have you looked at the Tamron 17-50 f2.8, costs around £300 new.

the VR one wont cut the mustard for you Olesya, the Tamrons good value for money but not built as well at the Nikon or optically as good but for the money its well worth it..

I used the Tamron and did well with it.

If budget was not a consideration it would have to be the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, There is nothing that comes close to it.

That said if you need something with a bit more range, The older Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 ( non VR version ) is still a classy performer.

That said a lot will depend on what body your using....?

If using a D80 for example, Your high ISO options are less, Than if you where using a D90 or D300.

A really classy f/2.8 lens will in most cases cost more than a D90 and almost as much as a D300/300s, No matter what lens you use on a D80, You will still have to beware of noise in High ISO images.

Even something like D5000 can shoot at higher ISO figures than the D80, Yet still produce clean images.....Smile

I mention all the above dribble, Because you state " Low Light " and low light with movement/action, Sure a fast lens will help, But you may also need to " Bump " up the ISO to get faster shutter speeds.

    Food for thought.....Huh!

Thanks for all the comments so far!

I use Nikon D80 (should have mentioned that at the start). My usual ISO setting for this work is 800 for stage-lit performances but I can get away with 400 with daylight indoors sometimes if lucky.

At the moment all my 3 lenses are Nikon and quality is great (although were not expensive). I wonder if i will be disappointed with any "third party" lenses. I 've read a bit about Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 and it sounded good on paper - but anyone had real life experience with it and how it compares to say, Tamron or are these really not worth it? 24-70 would actually be the ideal range for me (but £1200 - ouch!!!!). 70-200 would be too long for indoor work and I have a lovely (and cheap) Nikon 70-210 f4-5.6D which covers that range outdoors.
Thanks again and looking forward to more opinions!!!!

I don't have experience but have read that the sigma can be soft at f2.8 to f4 but fine at around f8, so I would advoid this one.

I would go for the Nikon 50mm AFS f/1.4 G

Cracking lens and ticks all the boxes for low light shooting

Or go halfers between your two primes, and look at this
Personally, I find that the Nikkor 17-55mm is just a gem.

Have a look at the Sigma 20mm f1.8 - I find it a much more useful focal length than my 50mm f1.8 (on an APC sensor) and the quality is excellent. I got mine for about £300

That 20mm is horrible wide open. the 24mm f/1.8 they also do is very good at f/1.8 and cheaper too.

what about the Nikkor 85mm f1.4D
