Why do the majority of digital wizardry articles use Photoshop CS.....? The latest CS5 is way over budget for the day to day camera enthusiast. Every month I am put off from buying photographic magazines and reading online topics when I see 'Photoshop' headlining. Those of the photographic fraternity that can afford to purchase Photoshop are likely to be the professionals making photography their livelyhood and as such are probably well practised in Photoshop's multitude of apps. Give us mere mortals more X3!

Ohhh well GIMP is a fair substitute in my opinion Smile and its open source to boot not too sure about the professional people owning photo shop point though iam not a professional but i own a copy have pretty much been using photo-shop for close to 10 years now for various things and now and then dabble with other applications like GIMP...

Photoshop Elements is cica £70 and is perfectly adequate for the majority of needs of an enthusiast. There is really no absolute need to go for full PS CS5.

The thing is CS5 is the full on everything, all you need if you want photoshop, is, well, photoshop.
I have just downloaded the 30 day trial of Photoshop (CS5 ) the CS is for "Creative Suite" which is a few different bits all packaged together.
I cant find PS as a stand alone product and im considering switching to Elements.
Photoshop 5 is pretty sweet though i must admit.

Edit, just found it, almost £1000, Elements anyone

Exactly, but the problem is still as miyaguchi says - almost all the online and magazine guides are written for the full photoshop. This means when you try to follow many with elements you eventually come up against a barrier where the software doesn't quite let you finish the whole method- or if you do you lack the finer controls that make the method worthwhile.

I do agree its a great failing - especailly for the magazines - since very few amateurs can justify spending as much (if not more) on the software as they just did on their camera when there are other options that are more financialy sound - like elements, paintshop pro or gimp. £600 is a lot of money and heck if I had that now I still would stick to elements and instead go out and get something for the camera (a nice lens or maybe a flash or a really good tripod!)

to be honest are the magazines that great for giving instructions on photo editing? You can buy books targeted at your chosen editor. For me the Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements was a great book and it gave me all I needed plus it unlocked some features Wink

Carefull!!! This is very similar to the other thread comparing Photoshop and PSP and the Photoshop police arrived very quickly and we were almost arrested!! Tongue

I've have also just downloaded CS5 trial and been using it, it doesn't seem to be any better the PSP IMHO and the price is pretty high and I can't justify spending that much, if there was little difference between the two in price then the choice may be harder but i still think the user interface is better on PSP. PSP is very much a copy of PS, it's a bit like what Microsoft did in the 70's when they reproduced someone elses work and brought it to the masses cheaper.

A lot of the things shown in magazines for PS can be done on PSP, a lot of the tools are the same, they just have different names.

Right i'm off before the PS Police arrive!! TongueTongueTongueTongueTongueTongueTongueTongueTongueTongueTongueTongue

Appears that I am not alone in my stance against PS. As I write on the Home page of EPz alone there are four links to PS subject matter. Come on Team give us some variety.

I guess they focus on Photoshop because that's the "industry standard" app?

it may be pricey to those who buy it, but many seem to "have" it Wink

There are some articles on the GIMP its not bad and free. Plus the next version should be very good.

Since there seems to be no conclusion on the photoshop vs PSP thingy i thought id trawl the internet for a comparison and came up with the two links below, hopefully these will give some interesting perspectives Smile :-

not read those, but I've used PS for years and have PSP at work - I really can't find my way around PSP at all.

    It's just familiarity really.

Me as well. Elements all the way for me with good plugins, smartcurve for example, a free curves tool I also use The 'Neatimage' plugin for noise.

Strange isn't it that the full blown Photshop costs between £600 and a grand yet everybody seems to have it! Wink

i dont know but if i remember CS3 was about 350 USD odd and another 200 USD for upgrade to subsequent versions Smile so it may actually not be a far fetched possibility
