Quote: Do older people prefer old things?

I definitely preferred the body I used to have, it was much lighter and fitter, and it ate what it liked without gaining weight.

Its looks were all that was gorgeous about it. It cost a bundle to buy and drove us insane paying for all the repairs and maintenance. Finding a gear was like stirring a bowl of porridge; the steering was heavier than a 1950's HGV and with twice as much "play". The heater, wipers, lights and breaks were all virtually useless. As for its bad points: well there were too many to mention. I still loved "her" though and was sorry to see her go.

A wee while later I bought a T4 camper as a day van. 30 years of progress shone through as the newer one was wonderful. I ended up using it when I had a job that involved a lot of driving between offices where I was running courses. It never once let me down.

The old one had soul; the new one reliability. The old one turned heads and made people smile; the new one just got me to work. It was a nice experiment but I wouldn't do it again.

Its all about money these days too and not just about what you like ! I have had the big fast cars ( fastest was the wrx impreza ) and up to recently a Land Rover , have now had to be sensible and trade the cooper and the land rover in as cant afford the astronomical fuel costs any more . Now have a Skoda Octavia which is actually still fast only costs 30 quid a year road tax and hits 50mpg easily as an average.

Although it may not look as good , i am certainly going a lot more places in it !

I do love older cars tho and my dream would be a 66-67 shelby mustang. In the meantime i think i might treat myself to the odd trackday with the money saved on motoring !!

Quote: The grilles on astons have stayed the same ?

the shape around the grille may have changed a little - thus changing the outline of the grille - but the actual pattern of is the same as always

The new Mondeo will have a grille that mimics the Aston Martin's one, perhaps the future Astons will just be seen as overpriced and not as practical Mondeos....?

    Smile

Don't know about Astons but the new Mondeo is better and prefereable to older ones..

If i had a choice would either be a shelby Cobra or a Lancia Delta Intergrale, after a load of bad press, with the beta i think, lancia finally got it right with the intergrale. Only down side left hooker only. On the upside there is a garage not to far from me still dealing in them. One day maybeWink

Running old cars is definetly not for the faint hearted.
Unless you have a good knowledge of car maintenance you will end up either broke or giving up.
I have seen many people dream of restoring an old car buy something reasonable and within months they are trying to get rid of it as the "honeymoon" period has passed.
You only have to surf the various sites to see hundreds of classics up for sale described as "part renovated".
A fully renovated Spilt Screen VW camper or in my case an MGB or MGA will have cost far more to renovate than could ever be clawed back on resale even if you do as much of the work as possible yourself.
Fortunately the only work I cant do myself is retrims and paint even that can cost anywhere from a thousand pounds for a road car to several thousands for a show car.
Never forgetting you cant nip down to the local garage to get spares so if you are thinking of doing it check out spares availability first no probs at all with MG's

A friend of mine restores old motorcycles purely out of amiration for the many bikes that wrere made here.
Certainly easier on the pocket than cars along with the prde and satisfaction.

Was it the Granada that was the large version of a Cortina? I seem to remember Boycie type characters driving them when I was a kid.

There was the Consul and the Granada - basically the same car but the Granada was the bigger-engined more luxurious version and they were both big brothers to the Cortina. They used one (the Consul, I think) in "The Sweeney" with John Thaw and Dennis Waterman.

Yeah - I remember cortinas - the farm I worked on had a granada (2.8 Ghia X) and a Cortina, had those black vinyl seats which burned like hell when ti got sunny Smile

I learned to drive in a Sierra, a Y reg... now that's going back a bit!

I'm in 2 minds when it comes to these cars - the classics are wonderful things, so different and small compared to today... but the new ones have such presence... the California and Aston DBS I saw were just works of art, and huge with it. Certainly more "wow" factor about it...

I like them both.... and from the show am making a few decent sales too, which is nice. I don't think many have seen shots of their car in the style I do them Smile
