Can the FL36 be used in full auto? I'm a real greenhorn when it comes to flash photography. I want an economical flash to use on-camera in the indoor galleries and conservatories at the Zoo mainly. Will it fit the shoe of the M5 without adapters?

Its a very good flash but has slow recycle times.

I'm looking at the Metz 15 M-1 macro flash at the moment, trying to find out if its compatible with the little kit flash that comes with the EM-5 and whether it has High Speed Sync potential.

If it does I may well get it, of not I think its going to be the Olympus FL 600R for my macro work (off-set on a flash bracket)

If its for off camera use and you don`t need the video light Brian the FL50R would be better.

It would be compatible with any flash Brian, it has a built in optical slave I believe.

Its a good bit of kit but a fair bit more expensive and a lot bigger / heavier which would tend to rule it out for me Paul
Yes, the Metz has built in slave capacity + sync cord compatibilty + ttl function with the olympus but I haven't yet got the definitive info I'm looking for. I'm hoping that INTRO 2020 may come back with this tomorrow

I think your answer is here Brian.

Oops! You weren't talking about the 600R.

Yes the FL50R is almost twice the size and weight of the FL600 that`s why I mentioned off camera use Smile

The larger FL50r is not that much dearer compared to the FL600, but the new FL600 is just about usable mounted to the OM-D.

I used the FL50 on camera (TTL full auto) at a wedding last week and I am pleased with the way it worked. I was mainly using it as fill in.

It did not look to big for the camera but it did make it a little top heavy.

I have added both parts of the battery pack and this helped a lot.

Talking about the battery pack, I expected it to switch automatically from one battery to the other but the pack I have does not, I have to manually select which battery I prefer. Do other users have to do this?

If it does not switch by itself I am just as well carrying a spare battery in my pocket and have wasted £100+ Sad

I carry 3 spares in my pockets Barry. To stick a battery pack on this compact little DSLR would ruin one of the best features of the camera, imo.

Guess it all depends on what you wanted the grip for, there`s a reason for calling it a portrait grip Smile

If you switch the camera on with a battery in the grip, does it say "pbh" on the screen under the battery symbol, if it does not you have set the camera incorrectly.
