My first chance to try some night shooting, looking from Southbourne across Bournemouth Bay toward the fireworks display on Bournemouth Pier.
I learnt several things doing it, not least was that even when locked onto a sturdy tripod the 75-300mm lens at 300mm still vibates in the wind, to the extent that IS1 can't stabilise it sufficiently for a sharp image (I tried IS off + the other modes as well.)
I ended up using the 45mm f1.8, what a gem of a lens that is for less than £300. It was physically short enough that the wind didn't set up vibrations and with IS1 on I got sharp images (even if I had to crop by about 50%.
However, the biggest lesson was to RTFM, I spent ages trying to find the "Live Time" setting which I wanted to try with the fireworks, could I find i? Could I heck.
Anyway, having now read the manual I find it was only two clicks of the dial beyond the 60sec position in M mode - DOH! ![]()
I've only had time for a quick flip through my files from tonight but I seem to have got some reasonable images for a first try and remain delighted with this little toy ![]()

Very good Brian, I`ve been having fun with the menu as well.
Yesterday when I pushed one of the fn buttons I got tone curve or something on the rear screen, today its gone and I`m pretty clue less ![]()
I would`nt have thought the IS would be of any use using a tripod.
thanks Paul, me neither but looking at the image on screen I could see the continuous vibration set up by the wind (I suspect its the downside of a relatively long but lightweight lens) and putting IS1 on did seem help a little, just not enough to damp it out completely.
I'm going to try putting a light beanbag type mass on the end of the lens to see if it will damp out the oscillations next time (resting my hand lightly on the barrel seemed to help a little but I was too clumsy to do it for long)
Another thought, does anyone know of there is a small tripod ring for this type of lens, I reckon that would do it?
Correction - Some time ago I stated that the ev compensation adjustments can't be seen in the EVF. This is not true, changes are visible, and the histogram can also be superimposed and used for visual adjustments.
Sorry![]()
something like this maybe but smaller Manfrotto 239 lens support
or this maybe? hmm, DIY I wonder
the effect of having IS off and in mode 1 at 300mm on the tripod (manfotto 055CXPro4) with 0.4 sec exposure, neither is acceptably stable but IS1 has a noticeable effect, direct crops from the full image

for comparison, this is looking the other way with the 45 f1.8 on, the tall light towers in the far distance (see the crop) are the Fawly Refinery and another structure on the IOW (I think) f 8 with 1 sec exposure IS1 on

Hold down the f2 button and turn the front control dial to cycle through the options.......choose the hilight and shadow option and let go of the f2 button. Then when you give the f2 button a quick push it brings up the control square on the rear screen (or in the viewfinder), and you can adjust the curve using the two control dials.
Yes funny that ![]()
This will please CB
