Not all Pentacon optics are sharp. When testing lenses. one of the American comics used to show the MTF curves for two reference lenses to give their readers something to compare the results with. Their best ever test was the Zeiss Planar and I if I remember correctly, the worst might have been a lens made by the Pentacon group.

If you already have the lens, then do a test with a film body before spending money on a adapter.

You can pick up a 1.8 50mm manual focus Nikon lens for practically nothing and it'll couple up to the metering system.

On a 300D Canons own 50mm f1.8 does just fine and retains electronic lens control and AF.

the 50mm 1.8 canon lens is fabulous, i have one, and love it, my most recent image in my portfolio was shot with it if you want a peek.

Go for the canon, its worth it.

A slight confession is needed. I'm not a Canon user and know nothing about their cameras. When I read 300D, I assumed it was the Nikon D300.

Hunted Dragon, sorry to have lead you astray.

Checking the completed listings on ebay.co.uk, I see that used Canon 1.8 50mm lenses sometimes sell for prices around 50 quid. Still quite a lot, considering the price for a new lens used to be only slightly more than that.

The way to really get a good bargain, is to look for people who are selling their old EOS film camera together with a 50mm lens, not separately - checking the completed listings I see that several of these combinations have gone for around 15 pounds! You simply take the lens off the film camera, put it on your 300D, put the body back up for sale on eBay, and you have the bargain of the year!
