I have a pentax mz30 slr and may upgrade to the ist D, digital slr, in the near future (as I can use same lenses, and have had no trouble with my current camera,I'm looking at pentax again).
Just wondered if anyone had one and what their views on the camera are?
I have read a few reviews and they all seem to praise the camera more or less, but I thought I'd ask here too

    Thanks for any comments
    Dan

I've been using one since they came out and overall very pleased with the performance. One of the highlights is the really bright viewfinder. It also feels well built. You can see some pics I've taken with it in my portfolio. It's a bit bright on reds in some shots, but this can be tweaked once you become accustomed to using it and especially by working with raw images.

There is a new low cost one coming from Pentax. Look in the news section, it may be of interest to you. It looks to be aimed at the D70 sort of spec. Pete likes the 1st D I think.

    Edit

Pete must have posted while I typed away.

I use it too and alot of the images in my portfolio have been taken on it. I've had the opportunity to use a couple of different lenses on it recently too and quite pleased with the results. K.

LOL typing at the same time, thanks for the quick reply, I would like the best camera I can get for the money but will look in the news section thanks.
I have another question too, I'm going to new york at christmas until the new year, and will be taking my traditional slr and lots of slide film Smile but I have been looking on websites of photography stores in new york, and the best I have found so far is B&H photo, the '*IST D' comes in at $1240 which is around 700 (and maybe a discount in the january sales, wishful thinking I know but.....lol), would there be any conflicts with buying a camera from the us?

You need to check up on things like will the warranty be honoured back in the UK or would you need to ship it back. Also beware of local taxes in the states, they can often add an extra 6% to the sales price. And finaly, I would transport it back to the UK out of its new boxing. Do cameras attract importy duty etc? Have a forum search I think it has been discussed, but I forget the conclusion.

If I can get one with UK warranty, do you think 700 is a good price as the majority I can find are circa 1000 from the uk
I've been told if I wrap it and mark it as a gift then import tax would not be an issue, dont know whteher this is correct or not.
I've ran a search but cant find anything :-s

I don't think US camera warranties are generally recognised in the UK but I believe it's possible to buy a UK/Europe warranty - although this would have to be factored into the cost. Import VAT is 17.5%,

At that price it sounds very good.

The Pentax *ist is beginning to look well-overpriced now, compared with some of the recent competition.

Just been looking at the new IST D'S', are there any significant downgrades from the IST D and does anyone have a specific date of its release?
I want a decent digital, I've been using the office's Canon D30 for a while on and off, and considered the ist d due to my experience with my traditional pentax, but If the isd's' are going to be sold at $700 (400)with as many features etc, this may be a more economical choice for my use Wink

If the RRP is 700 in the UK you should be able to get the cam for less than 600 at (say) an online retailer.
