Just got the K-1000 recently as a gift, with the pentax asahi 50mm prime fast lens.

I really love the simplicity, solid built and performance of this camera.

Just wondering if there are any other users of this camera in here ?

    Pentax addict here!

I don't have a K-1000 - but have an MG, ME-Super and a couple of MX's (and maybe an LX one day too)...

Pentax lenses of the period are superb too... it's worth tracking down some of the SMC lenses introduced at the same time as the K-1000 - you'll not find a better 28mm than the SMC f3.5 (built like a brick outhouse tho)... and some of the later SMC-M and SMC-A lenses are crackers too.

Which 50mm lens do you have?

I have the Asahi SMC 50mm f2 Lens.

Would it not be great if someone made a digital back for these camera's, especially the classic K-1000.

I'm thinking of getting a 200mm zoom, asahi smc lens. Have you any idea about zooms for the K-1000 ?

Although, I still enjoy shooting on colour transparency.

Well I'm not the person to ask about zooms (I don't own any) Smile The Pentax zooms of the period aren't all that great to be honest tho the first model 80-200mm isn't that bad. If you do want zooms I'd suggest looking for Tamron or Vivitar Series 1 lenses as these are very good.

Pentax K lenses (pre-AF) come in three series -

SMC - sometimes known as K series
SMC-M - introduced for the smaller M cameras
SMC-A - are pretty much M lenses with electrical contacts for the program mides on the A cameras

The K lenses are built like tanks, very good glass tho. The M lenses are smaller tho often not quite up to the same standard optically as the K's (that said the 28mm f3.5 and 135mm f3.5 M lenses are very good). Ffordes usually have a good selection of Pentax glass and at very good prices too.

    My Pentax lenses are:-

    28mm f3.5 SMC
    35mm f3.5 SMC
50mm f1.7 SMC-M this is a corker - 'the sharpest lens Pentax ever made' tho the f2 is very good too (there are a few pics taken with this lens in my portfolio), you can pick an f1.7 for around 20 to 40 secondhand
    100mm f2.8 SMC-M
    135mm f3.5 SMC
    200mm f4 SMC-M

I'd love a 24mm f2.8 SMC if someone would care to donate one Smile

Did I mention I can be very boring when talking about Pentaxes...

I used to own and use a K1000. A great camera. I learnt a lot with it until it was stolen at a gig. I think I've gone on before about the 50mm f/1.7 I had. I can confirm Ceri's claim that it was sharp. A stunning lens.

Zooms are convenient but prime lenses are faster and often give far better results.

I was told that a great way to learn the fundamentals was to just use the standard lens. It teaches you to see and it makes you work for the shot - none of this zooming in. You have to walk!

I'll second Dave on zooms - a soom at 28mm is a very different beast to the same lens at 80mm, or even 200mm. I think they encourage people to look at the world through the viewfinder when the best pictures are sometimes happening elsewhere. Also using a prime forces you to move around the subject, and you'll often find a better picture that way.

Ok there is an SMC K-mount zoom lens that I've seen at a local camera shop.

I'll find out and ask your opinions soon.

Thank you for the wonderful feed back.
