I am new to photography and have much to learn. Can anyone please tell me why it is that although I take photos on the same setting..when I transfer them to ephotozine and some I have cropped quite considerably..even those appear much larger than some that I haven't cropped at all. What is it that determines the actual size of any uploaded photos?

Not quite sure if I've understood your question right. Do you mean the file size of your image, right?
I think the answer is if you crop to much you get/see more background noise and this increase the file size ( more details - greater file size, more colours - greater file size).
I also recommend to have a look at: Resizing an image technique
