Models are great, they look amazing, know 10001 different poses which they can work through so you get loads of variety, and are usually pretty patient types - especially if you're paying them.

"Ordinary" people on the other hand usually don't have much experience, stand awkwardly and really have no idea what to do - where to put their arms, where to look... or anything like that.

What tips/tricks/ideas do people use to get great shots of ordinary people.... ?

Magazine tear sheets can help - I find if the subject has some kind of reference as to how they should be looking, the results are noticeably better.

Alternatively, tell them to pretend to be a model Smile

I photograph them when they're mostly not aware of it. Smile

"prunes" is better.... get them to say that instead

Get them to say whiskey, slowly, i.e. whissss......key. Click the shutter on "key". Smile

Getting them to do daft things, or think of stuff, often gets a decent reaction too. You only need 1/100th of sec of daftness if you're quick Wink
