Hi, my name is alex and i live in south london and i am 14 years of age.

For a photography coursework project we have been asked to take 6 pictures that describe ourselves and who we are.

I have been getting confused because as most other pupils in our class are taking pictures of their dogs or houses saying 'this is my dog, or this is my house'

I am a bit confused on what to do, whether its for example taking a picture of bubble bath and saying your bubbly.

I had one idea which was to buy two face masks and paint a happy face and an unhappy face and put the happy face on my face and the unhappy face mask on the back of my head.
I would take a picture from the front face on and hold a hand held mirror reflecting the unhappy face onto the photo.
I would say this would describe myself as how ever cocky i get i can feel self conscience maybe be part of a teenager?
I think this is a strong meaning and is a lot better than anyone else is doing for their project.

I just wanted to know if you guys think im doing the right stuff and if you like my idea??

Also please possibly could you give me a few more ideas as i am stuck because i have to find 6 and its in for next week!!

    Thanks in return

    Alex

Don't mean to be funny, Alex, but as you post this question within minutes of joining epz, apart from actually taking the photos it sounds like you are asking us to do your homework.

Also as I guess many of us on here don't know you how can we give you ideas for photos that describe who you are?

Alex, I think your ideas are a lot more original than those of your class mates - I'd go for it!

If in doubt, get a pro to do it for you......or failing that, KeithH or Boyd. Wink

But joking aside, my suggestion, Alex, would be to get a piece of paper, and write your name at the centre.

List all the things around your name that describe you, from emotions, to possessions and passions. I'm sure you'll quickly come up with ideas that will help fit your brief.

I know you should really be left to do this on your own, but I'm on a good mood today - hope it helped, somewhat.

    Michael.

    I like your idea too.
You seem to be thinking of unusual and interesting ways to express how you feel - and that is what makes us who we are.
I would continue along those lines.

    Hi Alex

I think Ashley is being a little harsh here as you have come up with an idea of your own. I think your idea of the face masks is a good one, but keep them simple, don't over paint. If you keep thinking along the lines you're on I don't think you'll go far wrong, just try to expand on your ideas. Think about who you think you are and what you do and the pictures will come, just a picture of your dog & your house as others are doing does seem a bit simplistic, so maybe your photographs need to reflect who you feel you are, not just what you are. Hope this helps, my son who's 15, bounces ideas round me.
Maybe ask your parents & friends who you think you are and if their ideas conflict with your own, you have another expansion on your mask idea.

    Sarah

Edit - when you've got your shots, post them in the critique gallery & you'll get a feel for what others think of them

Your idea sounds to me to be on the right lines. Actually quite a good idea. if you can think of one like that I'm sure you can think of 5 more. Or do a tag search on portraits. Paul

    Alex,

I quite like the idea you posted and think you should carry on along the same lines. Your idea will definitely stand out as original going on what you said your classmates are doing. After all, in this current age where everyone fancies themselves as a pro tog, it's the original ideas that stand out and get noticed. As I said your off to a good start and some good advice has already been given.

    Good luck.

    Alex.

What about dressing up as a tramp and sitting on a blanket by a street corner, holding a piece of cardboard that reads:

    "Will Shoot Weddings for Food"

Because you're desperate to be a photographer?

NB: I mean doing this for a picture. Not just for a laugh or anything.

LAF, i like your idea, sounds great, but with all due respect i dont want to copy it completely has ill find this would just be stealing it, maybe change the sign or something.

Do you think sports or personal hobbies would be a good way to describe myself?

I have a picture of a koi carp bathing next to a lilly pad in a pond because i like fishing, I have a rally car doing about 60-70mph through a forest track, because its a great picture and i love cars and speed and i have a firework in the air going through a cloud at night because im bright(ok the firework idea was naff but its a good picture, if i come up with more ideas ill probably change the firework one.)

You have the imagination to take the project further than your classmates by the sounds of it.
Go with your feelings....just make sure your teacher understands where you are coming from (my daughters 'photography' teacher knew less than she did).
Remember it a 'photography' course and so the technical abilities must show through as well

Give the kis a break, after that he'll probably never use EPZ again, he's only asking.

No thats alright dave, i can see where he is coming from.

    Someone else told me this

' This assignment isn't about telling the teacher "who you are." It is about getting you to think about who YOU are. '

    I think this makes sense

I got a friend who is also doing the course to send me his pictures via msn... 4 pictures of cars, one mitsibishi, one VW camper van, one hummer h2 (With him in it so he didnt take the photo), and one other japanese import.

No offence to him but i really dont think that he has thought about this project that deeply as he could have used one picture to say and/or explain to the teacher that he likes cars. The composition is moderate in his pictures, except he has a few people standing infront of some of the cars and to the side. Now i have been told a photo without composition is not a photo.Again i can see what she means.

My sister gave me an example, she has done GCSE art and got an A. She said make a stop sign out of cardboard and place it infront of a new block of flats that are being built in our area. Giving the teacher the impression that you like thinks to stay the same and you dont like buildings going up.

I thought this was a good idea, but wasnt really me. I mean, dont get me wrong, I wouldnt lose out of marks because i dont beleive in that, because like i said, i have never had the teachers before.

    Cheers

    Alex

PS: if i make the pictures i already have smaller say 250x250 can i post them in this topic?
