When I installed CS4, I downloaded the 64bit version because I have Vista 64 bit and I thought that they would be more compatible.
Recently I wanted to try a noise reduction programme such as Noise Ninja or the one from NIK. I have discovered that neither will work with the 64bit version of CS4.
I telephoned Photoshop customer support who told me I could download the 32bit version of CS4 from my cd, install it in X86 and run the two side by side. I tried this but the installation keeps telling me that it can't open because Bridge is running and I need to close it first even thogh Bridge is not open.
Twice I have tried to telephone Photoshop again and just end up for 30 minutes listening to their music and giving up, so sent them an email enquiry. An automated reply said they would answer within I think 2 days. That was over a week ago and I have heard nothing.
Anyone any ideas about how to:-
a. Get some service from PS!!!
b. Load the 32 bit version alongside the 64 bit one
Incidentally does anyone know the advantages of the 64 bit version if there is any, because I suppose I could uninstall PS and re-install, though knowing my luck with computers something would go wrong in the process ![]()
Sorry for the long waffle.
Cheers
Derek
Hi Derek
When I installed CS4 on my Vista machine, it automatically installed both versions so I choose which I run (like you, I have some plug-ins which will not run as 64 bit applications).
Can I suggest you do a complete uninstall of Photoshop and reinstall using the defaults?
The main advantage with using a 64 bit operating system is access to more memory:
Depending on what edition of Vista you are running: Home Basic is limited to 8GB, Home Premium is limited to 16GB and the other editions (Business, Enterprise and Ultimate) let you get all the way up to 128GB.
To be honest unless you find the 3Gb (ish) memory address limit on a 32 bit Vista platform a problem then stay with 32 bit. Are you dealing with large files ie hundreds of Mb ?.
Not sure why you would blame PS for 3rd party software not behaving correctly. However you may have a case if the software conflicts when run in Vista 32.
Many thanks Barrie, If I do as you say and uninstall, will I then lose all my photos and ratings currently in Bridge?
The Crofter - Thanks for the explanation. I have a business edition of Vista. I wasn't actually blaming PS for 3rd party software not working but moaning about how difficult it is to communicate with them!
Cheers
Derek
Ah.. that might be a problem. It might be possible to do a reinstall "over the top" as I think I remember it will do a 'repair' but I'm not entirely sure about that (no doubt someone else will know)
No problem, I understand the frustration. Can you save the bridge cache and reinstall ?. I have no idea if this keeps all your input data but perhaps a search may help.

You can get the NoiseNinja plugin for 64bit OS - see here.
Works perfectly for me with CS4 on Win XP Pro64 ![]()
