"What's Adobe doing with Photoshop? In the interest of giving customers guidance as early as possible, we have some news to share on this point: in addition to offering 32-bit-native versions for Mac OS X and 32-bit Windows, just as we do today, we plan to ship the next version of Photoshop as 64-bit-native for Windows 64-bit OSes only."

Doesn't sound unreasonable... You have to remember that 'Adobe Photoshop v***' always was/is a professional tool. Professional graphics people will always aim to get as much processing power as possible and 64-bit is here - and vastly superior to32-bit. The average digital photographer doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of Photoshop's capabilities. Smile

What is said in the artical is that when CS4 is released MAC & Windows 32 bit versions will still be released however a new 64 bit version will be made available for 64 bit Windows only, there will be a 64 bit MAC version but not until CS5! Something to do with Cocoa & Horlicks, or was that Cocoa & Carbon Wink

It may also have something to do with Microsoft being forward thinking, And producing 64 Bit versions of thier O/S several years ago.

It was obvious then that the advantages of 64bit where the way forward, Anyone ignoring this will now have to play catch up, Especially as 64bit capable hardware has been available for 3 years at least......!

As for Ovaltine versus Cocoa, I'd prefer a double scotch on the rocks......Smile

No, it is as Stu said, to do with Cocoa and Carbon.

Cocoa is the more modern development framework in Mac OS X, and will always be the technology to use moving forward. Carbon is a lower-level API layer which has been used by Adobe, Microsoft and others, including Apple themselves, often to port apps either from the Classic Mac OS or other platforms. Microsoft Office was Carbon-based on Mac OS X until, I think, the current version. Adobe Photoshop also relies on Carbon.

The problem is that at the 2006 WWDC, Apple announced that they would be making Carbon fully 64-bit, just as Cocoa and the rest of the OS is 64-bit. Adobe, I believe, started work on CS4 on the assumption that Carbon would be 64-bit, but one year later, Apple announced that they had dropped plans to convert Carbon to 64-bit. The reasons aren't known outside of Apple, as far as I know, so it's not clear whether there were technical problems or some other factor at play. Whatever the reason, that has left Adobe with no way to make Photoshop CS4 (which is Carbon-based) a 64-bit app. They have announced that they hope that CS5 for the Mac will be 64-bit, as they have started migration to Cocoa.

The biggest difference between Windows and Mac OS X as regards 32-bit v. 64-bit is that Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is fully 64-bit, and will run both 32-bit and 64-bit apps. Windows is available in separate 32-bit and 64-bit versions, so if you want to run 64-bit apps, you need to make sure you have the 64-bit version of Windows.

So...Adobe are fully committed to a 64-bit version of Photoshop et al for the Mac. They had originally hoped it would be CS4, but because of a change in Apple's plans, that's had to be postponed until CS5 at the earliest.

    C'est la vie.

Some seriously bad things would have to happen to the Mac before Adobe stopped development for it.

I don't know why Apple don't use the money they're making from iTunes and iPods to produce cut-price loss-leader Macs in order to take more of the personal computer market.
