    Hi,
im going to be doing a design course and really want something like photoshop to use at home before i start to practice with, however its well out of my price range. Some people have told me that photoshop elements is good just not as full of features. Can anyone let me know the difference. Also, how much would elements cost me, im really skint so hope its not too much??

Look at the adobe web site it tells you the difference. Elements 2 often turns up for free on scanners and cameras, version 3 adds in a photo album feature and some 16 bit features like RAW. Version 4 is a minor upgrade on 3 but locks out a few of the features that people have found release extra functions like curves.

It is good for photo editing, and you should be able to get it for under 50 new, just search the web.

If you want a free one search the web for the GIMP.

I have upgraded from v2 to v3. I shoot in RAW and use a combination of this and Nikon Capture 4, but in truth mostly just Elements. It's a great programme that matches all my needs, and reasonably priced compared to PS.

I'd suggest that for the sake of 60 quid or so it would be better to get PSE and try it out only to find you outgrew it rather than go for the full monty and then find that you're not using half of it and could have spent that money on a lens!

Thanks for the advice, sounds like i'd be best off starting out with elements (not that I have much choice!) but your advice is much appreciated!
I registered on here today and dont have net access at home so dont get many chances to enter forums like these, so just have one more question...who is the GIMP??
Free copy would be great but if I cant obtain one i'll start saving!
    Thanks again!

the GIMP is an alternative image editor, which is free. I've never used it, but it's pretty well thought of.

I think you can only download Gimp. I understand it's very good but not as user friendly as elements. Can't confirm that as I only use elements. There is another free software package available for download from the Serif website.

I have used Elements 2 for at least 4 years and loved it to bits. bought Elements 4 a few months ago, and sick of it, talk about slow. Wiped it off yesterday and gone back to Elements 2.

Elements for me. Tried Elements 2 and went straight back to Elements. Gives me all the photo-tweakery I need. I don't have curves as you do on PS of course but I work round it.

You can download Gimp from here worth a try as it costs 0

You can also try both elements and Paintshop Pro on a 30 day trial, worth doing before parting with any money.

Alternatively you can buy genuine older versions of these programs on Ebay such as this one

I started with Elements 2 a few years ago and think it is a good starter software for a pleasant price. It is quite powerful and with the adobe elements forum (a weekly challenge, pleasant banter and helpful members) you should have the basics soon under control. You have outgrown elements when you start yearning for photoshop.
