I need to get a basic photo editing program for work but know little about Photoshop Elements or Paint Shop Pro.
I would only be doing basic manipulation and then resizing and saving for web uploading. I would like to hear from users of either or both programs for their views.
With regard to Elements, I have read reviews where users have said that version 4 is very disappointing. Mainly because this version is very slow and Adobe removed the file browser. For these reasons would I be better off purchasing version 3.

i use psp7 and elements 2, psp has curves and elements doesn't unless you donwload the plugin, even then the free plugin doesn't allow colour correction in elements, you get to pay $35 for that version. psp and elements are both very good, they do pretty much the same thing but operate differently, so it's just a matter of getting used to whichever package you choose.
My son bought me Elements 4 for Christmas, and yes I find it a lot slower than E 2, not only that, but I feel the upgrade a rip off, I would have thought they could have at least given it the curves at least. Can't comment on Paint shop Pro, just that I started with Elements 1, on to 2, which I would recomend to you, version 2. I will put E 2 back on my computer in the not too distant future.
Bill.
Do you shoot raw images? If so a raw converter will allow you to do what you want (I think not sure about the re-size so you may need to look into that). You can down load Raw shoot essentials for free.
cheers
Al.
p.s. I use Phase 1 LE and elements 4 for my workflow. And I don't find elements slow.
What exactly do you mean by basic manipulation? Would you want to use curves for example? I have used both Photoshop and PSP v8 and there is little to choose between them. I would say PSP has slightly more functionality than Elements, but it's still very close. PSP and Elements are both the same in terms of ease of use. If you go for PSP, get version 9 or above as they cope with RAW files. However I use RAWShooter Essentials anyway which is great.
That's what I think, but do what Cambirder says - try them both out and if you do then we'd appreciate your opinion!
One thins ive noticed and u guys might be able to help with is that in photoshop when u save an image it retains basic picture inbformation, i.e. camera / shutter / date iso etc. in psp it dosnt or have i missed the point, because for ease of use i prefer psp.
It is nice to be able to download programmes for 30 day trial but frankly I didn't start to really get with PSP until the trial was over. Could be I'm dumb
[PC= Editing Challenged?] I'd been using MGI and a simple Adobe thingie previously.
That was before Elements came out and PS was out of the question becuase of cost. So it was PSP or nothing, so I stuck with it and have come to use it 95% ... I now have PS CS2 as well. Together they are highly complimentary and I also have Raw Essentials
I consider levels and curves to be basic tools and also the ability to use them not directly on the camera file but as a layer ... an adjustment layer not simply a layer, which permits you to alter actions you have previously done without scraping everything and starting with a fresh copy of the file.
PSP 7 onwards will do all your/my basic needs, and a lot more, even PSP 5 except after using v7 it was a bit crude when I installed a free copy on my wife's machine. She now has v8.1 after I moved to vX. My getting PSP X is largely an urge to see what the 'latest' is, not need ![]()
If you are at all interested in photography I think that while today you just want to do basic stuff but tomorrow or the next day you will be enthused with what you can do in a good editing programme such as PSP. Even if it is simply just 'repair' work. The tools for that are pretty much the same as used for 'messing around'.
