Recently downloaded trial version of Photoshop Elements 6. Very few filters actually work when in 'Full Edit'. Told repeatedly "Not currently available". Is this the case? I only wanted a basic editing programme - re-size, etc. but it would be useful to have more than a few options open if I choose to buy. Help required - frustrated with Adobe Support site!

those filters will be those present in elements when you hand over the money for it I suspect. Disabled from the demo to prevent someone cracking the time limit (if it has one) so as they don't get it all for free.
2 things though (for elements 6) that I have found are that it does not come with a layer mask, nor with suitable curves editing - however these two nifty filter addons will give you both features for free Smile

    free layermask
    free curves editing

I use Elements 6 and all the filters are avalibale for use.

    Gimp - Latest version linky.

Does everything you want...........and lots more, and it's free. I've been using it on one of my laptops as it's only 80mb on the disc (no bloatware). I'm also using Gimp portable from a USB stick with my netpad, it's excellent.

Second that. I use GIMP and it is excellent.
Give it a try - you have got nothing to loose and £50 or so to gain!!

Thanks very much for all your comments and quick response to my question. Bit confused about different replies but confusion may rest with me! I was referring to the filters listed in 'Effects' on right hand side i.e. ink outlines, chrome, etc. (Filters on top of programme work fine, i.e. saturate, hue, etc.) I have checked the Helpline and it states not all filters work. Still seems a lot to me not working. Maybe will try freeware as suggested.

Yes mine is a paid for version.
They're not that expensive if you shop around and as most magazines do tutorials for Photoshop I'd guess it would be the most useful programme for someone learning the black arts.

I may be wrong but if you are editing in16bit then they won't work
You have to convert to 8bit

You can follow the Elements and Photoshop tutorials with GIMP with little trouble and there are a lot of tutorials on here and other parts of the Web, where most of the beginners tutorials have been converted into GIMP speak where it is different.
GIMP comes with Curves and Layer Masks as standard Wink

As I so seldom use the filters, I had forgotten they mostly only work on 8 bit in Elements. Many of the photo editing tools are fine in 16 bit.

I must check in the GIMP, but last time I tried its 16 bit support was just as limited as Elements, later versions may be better. If you add Grants tools you get layer masks, and colour channels and curves on Elements.

John do you have the Virtual Photographer filters? They can be useful, especially wih the ammount of adjusting available.
