Hi - anyone got any ideas how to create a really smooth, professional looking pop art image from a photograph? In Photoshop of course....

Takui.... any hope of a tutorial maybe? I'm looking for a technique which will create really smooth tones [basically flat tones] - I don't want any graduations in tone. The colour must really "pop".

    S'cuse the pun...

    Thanks for any help,

    Judi

Never done this myself but a magazine I buy which comes complete with tutorials on CD ROM recently ran a two part feature in their magazine on this subject. The issues were March and April 2005 and this should take you to their website.

    Hope that helps.

Guess it all boils down to how much "pop" you are after. In Photoshop all you may need is to go to : image-adjustments-posterize and pick as few (or many) levels and presto...Flat areas of colour. Want to change any area colour, magic wand it and fill it with any colour to your heart's content. From then on you can invert the whole thing and keep on forever doing variations on the theme.
There's also software -PopArtPlus- that does it all for you "Warhol" style ( comes free on the CD with the June issue of Digital Photo Effects magazine UK).Pop away

I will look into it, if I find good source I will post the link here, if not I can make a tutorial for sure.
In any case, it could be good if you can make a link to a sample of what you would like. Smile

Hey Takui - thanks for your help on this. I've tried in Photoshop but my efforts are rather crude to say the least. I'd like something like this or this.

See this also, original to pop art .

    Cheers,
    Judi

And thanks also for the other suggestions - I've tried PopArtPlus - nice little programme but also quite crude. I want something smoother.

You can download colour effects and special effects filters from nikmultimedia.com as a demo. They continue to work after expirey, but you have to clean up the word Demo.

There was a lesson in Digital Photo March 05 issue, which I have done and would recommend.

Thanks guys - I missed that issue unfortunately. Perhaps I can order a back copy.

I'll have a look at the Nikmultimedia filters but what I'm really after is a technique that I can do myself.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

    Cheers, Judi

Still finding a proper way, with a tablet is very simple, but by means of filters and blending modes, Im still trying to find a way so it looks super smooth and drawing like. Smile

Thanks! I have a tablet but it's a basic model and I'm a total novice with illustration type things. If it turns out that I have to go the illustration / drawing / tablet route then so be it - I will have to go on another learning curve!

I really appreciate your help on this.

    Cheers,
    Judi
