We run slide shows of pictures taken during the day at events on a 50 inch HD plasma screen and get great quality stunning images.
We edit the pictures (Photoshop CS5) then run them from a CF card plugged directly into the screen via a USB and simply set the screen to run the images as a looping slide show using the screen's remote control.
There is no music as during the show people will be having dinner and later there will be music and dancing so the display is a background entertainment.
We used to use a laptop connected via a VGA cable to the screen (hired in) but when I purchased my own 50" plasma screen and stand I found that there was a USB input, this took out the need for the laptop and made life easier for us (less equipment to carry and less to go wrong).
One other point was that landscape orientation pictures fill the screen and look much better than portrait orientation pictures. This led to us adapting our photography to almost exclusively landscape orientation pictures when we are using the display screen.
I don't know if this will help you but it works for us, good luck.

How can it depend what you're reading?
Dpi and ppi are not the same thing.

Quite. But many books, magazine writers, websites and software producers either confuse them or (wrongly) use them interchangeably. Even been known to unwittingly do it myself. Eh, Chris?
[quote]Does anyone know of a software program that can create high quality slideshows that can be viewed on a large TV screen.
I believe Pro Show Gold will allow you to create high quality slideshows on DVD or even Blu-ray. It's worth persevering with because when you get it right the quality should look absolutely stunning. [quote]
Yes it does, but I don't think PSG is available for Macs.
Had similar problems. Was able to burn to DVD which played well, but since the introduction of HD, older DVD playes just can't resolve to the same resolution, and images look dreadful. Solution was to play back via the USB, and software which was part of the TV.
Even if burning to a BLUERAY device, there is no guarantee that it will play on the equipment that your client has.

Think this is a very interesting observation. The wider aspect ratio of modern TV's limit the impact of portrait shots.
Thanks again for the feedback.
I now have a couple of options to try, interesting POV about the uSB, I never thought of that, a lot of TV's come with USB input. Unfortunately mine doesnt, but I will be trying it out on a friends soon. I will post again later in the week with the result.
Thanks again.

Ah that's right. Don't worry there's a Mac guy on here who says you can run any Windows app, he'll be able to help you out
