Portrait lense for D5000

A friend of mine has a Nikon d5000 and is looking to buy a prime Portrait lense Any advice would be good regards David

Yup! If your friend was using a full frame Nikon body, I would probably suggest the 85mm option, As its a pretty standard reply to your question......

However, Taking the crop factor into account a decent 60mm lens would be better suited to the DX body, Lets say the superb 60mm Nikon micro lens options.

That said your friend could easily get away with a Nikon 50mm f/1.8, That crop factors to 75mm, Great results at a fraction of the cost of anything else on the market, Just make sure its the newer 50mm option with built in AF motor, Or its manual focus only, If they have deeper pockets, Then the latest 50mm f/1.4 option is a good way to go.

save some money and get the 50mm 1.8D
it gives you a great 75mm equiv for portraits. 85mm would give an effective 130mm which is too long
