The tamron 90mm DI macro is descriped as a portrait macro lense. If I had one of these on my D70 would that make it a 140mm thus not realy suitable for portraits? Without breaking the bank, what lense would you recommend for portraits using a D70?

    Not on a D70 they're not!

Try checking out the Nikon 50mm f1.8

Canon 50mm f/1.4 portrait. Great little lens. Same sort of result on a D70 look at magicboy's PF he used D70 and 50mm at one point.

50mm is still 50mm and crop 1.6 vs. 1.7 is near as matters.

In my defense, your honour, my post is correct...I've seen many mention they are using 50mm Canon lenses for portraiture.

Sorry, I should have added that in your case the Nikon 50mm may be a good choice. Thanks for the additions Smile

Now i'm confused! Cannon lense on a D70!

So I take it the Tamron isn't really ideal...what about something like the sigma 50mm F2.8 EX DG Macro or the 18 - 50mm F2.8 EX DC.
As you will gather I'm not that well up on lenses and need some help!

If you need macro, then sigma 50mm F2.8 ex dg macro is fine. But I personally prefer 90mm or 100mm for macro.

If you do not need macro, nikon 50mm F1.8 would be great for portraits.

The 90mm is ideal as it flattens some features, and give the image people like. However, like coltranekoh says you will need to be further away.

Just to throw the cat among the pigeons....

It does not make it a 140mm and therefore unsuitable for portraits, it makes it a 90 mm with the edges missing and cropped closer.

Using a 50mm you will not get the flattering flattening (that's easy for you to say!!) effect that people refer to.

I use the Nikon 50mm F1.8 great lens, couldn't justify the extra cash for the F1.4 version nor could I really see the need for the extra 0.4 of a stop.

My 50mm is my favorite lens - Its light, fast, and sharp. You can pick them up new for £79 in the epzshop, or slightly less (sometimes more!) on ebay. They seem to hold their value quite well.

I also have the 90mm Tamron but the 50mm is first out the kit bag for portriats and the like

    ???

    It's not 0.4 of a stop difference. It's approaching a whole stop.
    They run as follows.

    f/1.0 f/1.4 f/2.0 f/2.8 f/4 f/5.6 f/8 f/11 f/16 f/22 f/32 f/45 f/64

    Read this as an explanation.
