I'm having trouble understanding some of the portait styles, for example glamour, fashion, runway etc. I'm wondering what they cover, mainly so I know how to categorise my own shots and know what to say when talking to models. One I worked with recently when sviewing my portfolio on another site said they were fashion/editorial rather than glamour, although I'm not sure what the difference is.

Can anyone explain it or is most of it a matter of opinion?

    I'll have a stab at describing some of these;

    High Fashion
This is more about modelling clothing and/or luxury accessories. If you think about magazines like Vogue, etc. this is along the lines of high fashion. Models are normally quite tall and skinny although this is changing slightly these days to keep the politically correct people happy. However, it's important to point out that it's more about the product than the model.

    Runway modelling
Almost the same as High Fashion, but in this instance it is very unlikely that the models will be able to pose for you. They get changed and parade the clothes up and down a catwalk. Again, it's all about the clothes in runway modelling.

    Editorial
This is more like something you'll see in the high street magazines. The idea of editorial modelling is that the photos should tell a story. Editorial shots are normally a few photos in series with the same theme in mind, but can also be a single shot with a very strong theme where that single shot will tell the whole story.

For example they may be of a model dressed as little red riding hood, and a few different shots will take the viewer through the story you have in mind. Editorial shoots can be about the fashion or not. Magazines will sometimes use editorial series of photos to portray fashion, but not always.

Editorial shoots may or may not be necessarily about the clothes or accessories. It's more about the story and will include a model or more. Editorial is my preference as you have a lot of freedom with these shoots.

    Glamour
This one is definitely about the model. They are normally dressed provocatively and the whole idea is that it is meant to say to the viewer... 'look how sexy I am?'. Again, thinking about publications, Nuts, Zoo, Page 3 of the Sun... Some people put artistic nudes in this category, but I disagree.

    Portraits
I've added this one because you can also simply take a nicely framed shot of a good looking model. It's neither fashion, glamour, editorial or anything. It's simply a portrait. I noticed you have a few nice portraits in your profile so I thought it was worth adding.

    -----

There's also a few other categories (character modelling, speciality modelling, catalog modelling, etc.), but the ones above are the main ones I deal with.

That is a very loose and quick description of the various types. I'm sure there are more clearly defined descriptions and some people will beg to differ on the definitions.

    Thanks. That was quite helpful.
So I guess my stuff would more come under editorial/fashion than glamour if I had to choose and couldn't just describe them as 'portraits'. On the site I mentioned there isn't just a 'portrait' category, but that is really what I'm aiming for - just decent looking portraits.

Susannah 3 and Kristin are closer to fashion/editorial, in fact closer to editorial style as they convey a story more than the clothing.

The other Susannah shots are more portraits or sometimes referred to as head shots, or beauty shots is another term you'll hear. Beauty shots are normally about make-up, hair, etc. but they would fit that category.

I don't see any glamour in your portfolio. This shot of mine is closer to glamour.

Now I would see that example you gave as 'lingerie', but I kind of see your point.
