I've been looking for a tutorial on how to smooth the skin in portraits photography and couldn't find any. I'm not talking about the removals of blemishes and such as I already know how to do that but how to smooth the skin like in fashion photography. Does anyone has a tutorial or a good link to a tutorial about this? Thank you very much in advance. Smile

    Christ that's complicated!

No wonder my wife moans that she looks old!

Alternatively a shorter version, which I do. Check my gallery - a lot of the pics there have had skin softening done to them like so...

    1. Do the usual cloning healing brush stuff to get rid of the big flaws like spots etc.

    2. Create a duplicate layer of your pic

    3. Add gaussian blur to the duplicate layer so the shot looks out of focus. You will have to practice to get the right amount of blur

    4. Add a layer mask to the duplicate layer and click once on the mask.

    5. Choose eraser tool and start erasing around the eyes, nostrils, ears, mouth and any area you want sharp.

    6. Reduce the opacity of the duplicate layer until both layers blend to produce a natural soft skin effect.

Ok heres one that I use...

From the scott kelby book. Bear with me its a bit long winded but well worth it!

Open the picture that you want to soften

copy the layer twice by pressing "control & J" twice.
You now have 3 layers in total.

Click on the middle layers "eye" to hide it.

Then click on the top layer. Change the blend mode to "darken"

then go to "filter" and "gaussain blur" add a 40 pixel blur and click okay.

then click on the first layers eye icon to hide that.

go back to the middle layer and reveal its eye again. make that layer active. change the blend mode to "lighten"
apply a 60 pixel guassian blur.

Make the first layer active and reveal its eye and reduce the opacity to 40%.

Hide the background layer by clicking on its eye.

press and hold "alt" whilst clicking on the wee triangle on the layers palette and "merge visable"

this will now give you a flattened version of your 2 blurry layers. drag the new layer to the top of the layer stack.

Reveal the background layers eye icon again. Click the 2 blurry layers eyes to hide them.
Then click the top layer and bring opacity down to whatever opacity makes the skin look smooth (the rest of your pic will still be blurry though)

Still on the top layer, add a layer mask. Set your foreground colour to black, use the brush and paint over all the details you want to remain sharp, such as eyes, lips, hair clothes etc.

    Hope I explained it properly!

    Pascale..

just got your comment on my PF..

see on the layers palette..top right hand corner of it..just on the edge of the box there is a wee black or grey triangle hold alt
    and click that...

hope that helps! shout back if your stuck!

Ooooooh! Do you mean the arrow???
Ok, edit: I'm now at the end of ur tutorial and I'm not quite sure how to end it! O_o I know, it might be a dumb question but once I painted over the details that I want to remain sharp, what do I do? Just flatten the image?
BTW, So far, totally wicked! Wink

yep just flatted the whole lot...you can adjust the opacity on the top layer to make the skin softening more apparent or more sutble.
