I'm looking for a new compact at the moment, just something to keep in my handbag for when we are out and about & I don't want to lug around my normal gear. I've got it narrowed down the the Leica D-Lux 5 and the Panasonic Lumix LX5. According to reviews, almost the same camera, so thought I'd pop over to Jacobs later in the week to test and purchase one or the other.
However, the price of the Leica has risen over the weekend from £555.00 to £643.99!!! What is going on! The Panasonic has gone up by £40.00 as well, it has a free leather case with it worth £86.99, but think that must be added on, as the Amazon price is currently £72.00 cheaper, without the case.

I know things go up in price, but £89.00 in a weekend seems to be taking the pee.

Rant over, thanks for listening Smile

Also would be interested to hear from anyone with either of those models to know what they think of them or if anyone has any other recommendations.

The D-Lux is still £579 at WEX and the LX5 at £359.

Thanks Keith. Any experience of either, is the Leica just a branded Panasonic as the reviews say?

Yes, Sarah, if you want Leica on the badge you pay silly money but it's still a panasonic. Not used that particular one but used previous ones and they are a cracking little camera.

If that was the type you were after, I'd go for The Canon G12 though.

Paul, thanks for that, I don't want to go the route of changing lenses though as this is purely a handbag camera, but will show it to my son as he is about to buy his first camera and was thinking of going down that route.

Keith, thanks for clarifying that, it was what I'd got from the reviews. I'll have a try of the G12, I'd not looked at that as I am selling my G10 to part fund this and I've been disappointed with that from the first as the images are really, really noisy. A friend has just purchased one though, so I'll get her to let me borrow it for a day.

No need to change lenses, leave the kit lens plugged on Smile

It has a few advantages over high end compacts as well, its cheaper and has a much larger sensor.

All true, although I'd be a little worried about damaging it in my bag. But on the positive side, if Simon gets one I could use it as well Smile

LOL, I do live in Northamptonshire, but I am not the famous granny that foiled the jewel thieves, I've got a few years to go before that.

I have the Pen E-PL3 and my wife has a Nikon P7100

If I was going down the route of looking for a handbag camera (apart from starting the neighbours talking), I would consider the P7100 a far, far better bet.

I have an LX5 as a pocket (!) camera and am very impressed with it. I got mine as a 'manufacturer refurbished' off e-Bay for £250 (actually from Vennal Cameras in Ayr) and it was 'as new' condition and I saved £100 off new price. Metal body so very robust, (tho' a bit heavier), Leica lens.
Thoroughly recommend the camera and suggest you follow up that route to get one.

From what I have see noise wise the LX5 and G12 will be similar.
