I'm looking at getting a Canon 5D2 to use in a new business venture using photogrammetry; I am looking for a good sharp wide lens to go with it, and am thinking of the Sigma 28mm f1.8 EX DG or the Canon EF20mm f2.8 USM. Has anyone used either of these to offer their opinion? I also wonder whether the 20mm will have significant distortion - i can rectify the photo in the photogrammetry software but its better to start without too much distortion.
My main use for the lens will be photographing buildings exteriors to make 3D cad models.
I'm based in Guernsey and the local shops dont hold these lenses, so difficult to see before i buy.
    Thanks

Serious architectural photographers use tilt and shift - well to be honest really serious ones still use LF. How serious do you need to be?

like Keithh said, a canon 24mm tilt shift is the choice for serious architectural photography, although you can use wide angle lenses but the problems with wide angle should be obvious in the respect of lens distortion, this can be cured in photo shop however, tilt shift has another advantage over wide angle lenses to, tilt shift lenses are pin sharp from front to back where as wide angle lenses tend not to be as sharp.

Usual story i am afraid, you pays your money you gets your quality, something that has been lacking in this country for many years.

Thanks for the replies which i appreciate Smile
i should have said - tilt and shift lenes dont work with photogrammetry - i would have to calibrate the camera for every possible angle lol! This is also the reason why i'm avoiding a zoom lens.
has anyone used either of the two lenses tho, any experiences? Sigma 28mm f1.8 EX DG or the Canon EF20mm f2.8 USM
    Thanks.

    There's a canon 17mm TS-E as well

I've tried the old 24mm and wasn't really blown away, but had a quick play with the new version in a camera shop and it does seem a more impressive beast.

Tiz on my shopping list - the 17mm that is.

You can use a 17-40 and pit the centre spot somewhere near pavement level to avoid distortion to an extent, but you do lose 1/2 the shot to road and pavement...... or you could make a style out of it Wink

obvioulsly you should ignore my comment as I just read...

    lol

sounds interesting anyway - there's everything down to a 14mm F2.8 in the canon range. That's a lens I'd quite like too... maybe a fish eye for something quirky... err... the list goes one Wink

Just buy a tilt and shift lens anyway and 'miniaturise' everything! Grin

    Thanks guys Smile
I went for the 20mm Canon in the end, very impressed with warehouse express delivery Smile
Seems like a nice toy; out of interest when i calibrated it, it came in at 20.8mm, not 20mm.
