I was wondering if someone could help tell me how to put color in a black and white picture. For instance a red rose or a persons eye color. I am new at photography and like the unusual shots and techniques.

In simple terms - painting. Its done by painting the area with a dye but I'm sure its not called painting !!!

Are you referring to digital colouring or colouring existing prints?

Coloring existing prints. I don't know if I color a black and white picture or turn a color print black and white and then put colot back into it.

If the image is black and white then have a little practice with food colour. This is much cheaper than the special inks and will wash out if you go wrong. I buy tubs of colour not the bottles, this way I can mix them just like watercolour paints. Once dry they last and just add a hint of colour to flowers etc.

If you look in this months edition of Digital Photo magazine, there is a tutorial showing precisely this using photoshop. It's a CD movie type tutorial.
