OK...I've just bought the SB600, I'm reading the manual and need to ask some questions.
Probably silly ones......
I've been looking at pocket wizards to trigger studio lighting , not that I have studio lighting but thought I'd read up anyway.
I understand that the SB600 has CLS creative lighting system that will trigger wirelessly from the camera.
So my question is, as studio lighting picks up the trigger from the pocket wizard will studio lights pick it up from the SB600??
Sorry if its a silly question .
The SB600/800's don't trigger remotely like a pocket wizard, they use the camera's built in flash to fire, pretty much like one studio flash firing another using the slave cell.
....again!!OK....still reading.....so the PW can set off the SB600 plus studio lighting cos its plugged into one of the lights and will then set the others off. But the SB600 can only be triggered by the camera.....Right...I get it.
I'm only thinking theoretically here, and absolutely stand to be corrected as I haven't tried it....
but my guess is that to combine the SB600 with studio flash, it would be better to plug the PW into the Sb600 to fire that, which in turn can fire the studio flash using slave cells. Otherwise, the built in flash used to fire the 600 would also fire the studio flash, and there could be a mis-synchronisation.
just a guess, though...
Cool. That made my head hurt a little, so I'm going to have a beer. Enjoy your flash!
Just had a PM from Martin (Stix) which goes as follows....hope he doesn't mind me quoting him
Quote: Any flash will trigger the studio lights, so yes your sb600 will. But you need to be aware that it might put light where you dont want it, its another light source that will complicate the lighting set up. So best avoid using this method.
......so now I know. So in theory , you could use the flash unit (CLS as the PW) and a light , as long as you wanted that light effect , and they would all go off from the camera.
Cathy, the CLS system can not be used in conjunction with standard studio flash heads.
However, in standard mode, your SB600 can be used to trigger the other strobes.....but you can't use TTL metering for the extra heads.
If you use your SB600 in manual mode, you can use it just like any other studio flash head.
If the SB600 has a remote SU-4 mode like the SB800, then the studio flash heads can be used to trigger the SB600.
I hope I'm making sense to you.

I see.......so although it would set the lights off, there is really no point in doing this.....is that the same for the SB00...you'll have to excuse my ignorance on the subject.
In CLS mode,, your camera communicates with the remote flash units using a series of pre-flashes to determine exposure, then opens the shutter for the final flash.
These pre-flashes will set off the standard studio strobes before your shutter has opened.
In theory, if the studio strobe can recharge as quick as the SB600, it will show up in the exposure, but even if it does, the CLS system can not allow for it.
