I was sure we had at least one thread dedicated to quotations, but a number of searches turned up 0.

In prosperity, our friends know us; in adversity, we know our friends.

Talking about quotations, I've been trying to track down one which I think came from a Roman general & lamented the fact that every time he & his men were making progress they were reorganised & reshuffled by the powers-that-be. I think it began "We toiled hard..."

Anybody know who said it, or can give me the full quote?

...my fav` is by Noam Chomsky...

..."not only do the people not know... they do not know they do not know"...

...but it does`nt seem to be on the list of his quote`s here!?!

Ronald Reagan, what a funny guy!

"It's true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance?"

"But there are advantages to being elected President. The day after I was elected, I had my high school grades classified Top Secret."

"I have left orders to be awakened at any time in case of national emergency — even if I'm in a Cabinet meeting."

"Before I refuse to take your questions, I have an opening statement."

"My fellow Americans. I'm pleased to announce that I've signed legislation outlawing the Soviet Union. We begin bombing in five minutes." –joking during a mike check before his Saturday radio broadcast

"The government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it."

Quote: I've been trying to track down one which I think came from a Roman general & lamented the fact that every time he & his men were making progress they were reorganised & reshuffled by the powers-that-be. I think it began "We toiled hard..."

Allegedly by Gaius Petronius Arbiter, satirist, and aide to Nero.

Attributed to Petronius by Robert Townsend, 'Up The Organization' 1970

Probably originated on a barrack room wall in Germany after 1945

    First published in 1957

“We trained hard, but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams we would be reorganized. Presumably the plans for our employment were being changed. I was to learn later in life that, perhaps because we are so good at organizing, we tend as a nation to meet any new situation by reorganizing; and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization.” - Charlton Ogburn, pp. 32-33, “Merrill’s Marauders: The truth about an incredible adventure,” Harper’s Magazine, January 1957

I like this one. It works too, although sometimes I forget to use it.

"Boys, be ambitious! Be ambitious not for money, not for selfish aggrandizement, not for the evanescent thing which men call fame. Be ambitious for the attainment of all that a man ought to be."
