I had a long conversation with a friend today as she told me about being taken captive in the late seventies by the Argentinian military. Her husband, brother and 21 year old sister were also taken. My friend was 26, with children; she was held for 21/2 years, the first year in solitary confinement, the rest in a camp somewhere in the north of the country. She did not know what happened to her children till she was released. Her parents had cared for them; her husband was released after 3 years; she knows nothing of her sisters fate.
Here is a quote from a general in charge of a province at that time;
James Segrest asks about this quote, indeed one of the most horrific one can imagine. It was said by General Iberico Saint Jean, at the time governor of the province of Buenos Aires: “First we will kill all the subversives, then we will kill their collaborators; then their sympathizers; later those who remain indifferent. And finally we will kill the timid.”
Here is a link to where I got the quote, and info on a film that has been shown a number of times on PBS public broadcasting over here.
You can't polish a turd....... well you can, but all you end up with is a polished turd.
