Today I received a phone call from my brother to inform me that I am now the proud owner of a Fuji S3, it was won with my raffle ticket in his works draw. He works for BP by the way. I am very excited about this but it is way to advanced for me to use. So I thought of the possability of running a raffle for it and donating funds to the disaster that has now claimed so many thousands of lives. I was going to sell it on e-bay and donate the funds that way but thought of this idea. I was thinking of issuing 200 tickets at 5.00 a go. What do folks think and any suggestions on how to conduct this would also be of great help. I have no idea of the best way to do this , perhaps through paypal and I could then keep all names in a file and ask someone to pick a number, postal ways of doing it seems to cause a lot of delays/expenses etc and issuing tickets also costs, eating into the possible funds raised.

    Any help suggestions most welcome.

Maybe Pete could run the raffle for you? He already has CC details for a lot of site members.
    Very generous of you BTW.

No flies on you Andy I do not think I would sell it at all if it were not for the disaster, I will never be able to afford such a piece of kit so forgive me if I say a cash sale is not the puropse I was hoping to get the money, obviously for the fund, but also give everyone a chance of winning it. I was told by Kevin that it will be with me in approx 21 days. Do not mean to offend in the least Andy as I know you would give it a loving home.

PS this is my first raffle win ever !!!!!!!!!!!

Good idea Boyd, I am sure he could run a few images of the winner on the site as well. I will leave this thread running for a while. Off to Canada(Vancouver on the 13th) for 10 days and should have the camera here by my return, I will post images of it. and will go with what I reckon is the best idea of continuing with some sort of fund raising for it.

Put me down for two tickets Dave.

I think there may be a few legal obligations when holding a raffle which is open to members of the public. I've tried doing a bit of research but haven't come up with much other than if the estimated funds raised is less than 5000 you will only need a licence from your local authority. Worth checking out before you start this though.

WOW!! What a hugely generous thing to do Dave! What a prize and what a fab idea! Put me down for a ticket too.

Just thoughts - any reason for limiting to 200 tickets? You could raise a huge amount if there were loads of people interested.

I like the idea of using Paypal - sounds like a good fundaising method to me. Be interesting to see what K finds on the legal side.

Thanks for the replies so far. Legal side of it is a fairly straightforward thing for me to organize. I have done a little digging around and if a registered charity organizes a raffle/draw then it is covered by all sorts of things. My wife and I work for The Scottish Youth Hostel Association as manager here at Rowardennan. The S.Y.H.A. is a registered charity. If the draw were registered in thier name, and they have no objections to this which they do not, it is really just a case of them accounting for the funds raised, via myself, and then accounting for funds donated. No fees are taken by them and as the funds would be going to another registered charity the government also add a reasonable percentage as well.

No real reason why it should be limited to 200 tickets, just more of a case of lowering the odds while still raising enough for the needed cause. A small prefab shelter that can be used as a house for example can be bought for 95.00.

Any more thoughts let me know.

Well as for accounting for funds received, then we'll all have a copy of the email sending on the funds which will tally with some kind of (online?) log kept of everyone registering on the scheme, then everything should tally with no problem.

    ooo!

Put me down for 2 tickets too, I'll keep an eye on this thread for further payment info,

    Jamie

I don't think anyone seriously expects to actually win a raffle - you didn't Dave, so I'd sell as many tickets as you can for an extremely good cause.

How about saying a fiver a ticket limited to 200 tickets but with the option to donate extra if you choose, therefore keeping the chances of winning high enough to attract people fast and still giving the chance to raise more that a grand, after all they need the cash as fast a possible,

What a wonderful idea of raising money for the Tsunami appeal. I think you ought to up the tickets available to say 500 at least. This way you would raise more money, and what does it matter if you don't win, the money will be going to a good cause.
Put me down for two tickets at least.
