I don't know if this has ever been suggested before doesn't look like it.

So amid all the recent discussions about clicks and no comments and the value of positive and negative comments I thought up a sort of Tuesday night challenge.

The idea would be to identify a start and finish number of uploads (each image has a uniqe number - currently we are around 1503718) no more than twenty images max. And the challenge is to visit and to comment in a constructive way every single image in that group.

The challenge setter will look through all the comments and criticisms made (after say five days) in that group of uploads and will award a winner to the most pertinent, helpful, amusing whatever, it will be their decission.

The winner will then identfy the next set of up upload numbers for scrutiny (always working in advance rather than using images already uploaded).

What this will mean is that there will be a small group of images that will come under close scrutiny every now and again.

Could be very amusing and also really quite an exercise in how to leave useful comments and criticisms.

If there are any takers I would be happy to start it going - but I don't want to look like a sad old git dribbling in the corner as everyone looks the other way and shruggs!!

Cheers

Robert

Like all great ideas, no one dares to take it up.

I will join you in the corner - for now.

Another great idea...just like all good ideas it needs someone pushing it making it enjoyable to do and keeping it going. The One Hour challenge is a good idea too..and there's a prize but the numbers never grow and the Critique buddy things are great ideas but have faded out. I'm not sure how with these things you make it so more want to be involved. Maybe if you had it as the "Why these ECs are a rubbish choice" critique or "why these 10 pics shouldn't be RCs" you'd have the enthusiasm flying Wink
I hope it works...it would encourage viewing of older pics and some possibly give attention to pics that don't get a lot.

Ok I have been galvanised by the overwhelming chorus of approval for this idea (irony) thanks at least to Richard and Pete.

I am tempted to just fly with it anyway and see what happens so I will just advertise two image numbers which will start at sometime in the near future.

Its a sort of mini version of the guest editor project I guess but much less demanding in that there will be just twenty images for consideration and discussion.

And the GE seems to be a success, although I do have to keep on encouraging people to sign up.

Ah the mystery shopper is here!!

Happy to sign up to GE when I get a mo later in the spring. Thing is that you really do need a clearish week to do it justice - at least that is my impression from the feedback etc.

But Raid The Gallery will only take about an hour max.

.....you suggesting we start questioning your EC selections Pete?? Wink

These ideas are great and they do have momentum for a while - but sadly, things like the critique buddies and other things have faded away.

We've had another Buddies challenge this month, 6 joined and there are just 2 photos uploaded so far - there's 4 days left in the month. At the start we had 5, 6, or even 7 groups on the go.

With the buddies, the main reason for failure was that people ran out of time to take the shot they wanted.

With this, you just offer critique - no need to go out with the camera, so less reason for it to fail Smile

Thinking about why these things fizzle away.... one problem is that you can only really advertise these things in the Forums - so all the non-forum users will be oblivious to them.

So maybe if we could advertise these features by mass-PM, we'd get a bigger audience?

Ade

I couldn't agree more I have always felt that the forum/s is/are too transient and probably visited by a very small proportion of site members anyway. If there was some other place to advertise these iniaitives a little more fixed and public that woudl be really helpful.

As a species we seem to be programmed with a bias towards the negative so, yes, something like that would probably be a huge success! But not, I guess, what we really want on EPZ. Lol! Grin

We can, like we did with the buddies option and many other new features, include it in the site wide "new feature" announcement. then it hits everyone and doesn't exclude those who have pm turned off.

The forums are then used as the vehicle for people to discuss the idea further

That's true - and the first few buddies things were a roaring success on the back of that mass-spam-PM, so maybe another shot of Spam would boost them back into orbit?

i.e. the reason they've dwindeld is that people just forgot about it - if it was messaged each month, it may boost it right back up there?

We started the Groups concept too - worked pretty well to begin with, I still post to any relevent group, but alas people have forgotten about those too.

The key word is "forgotten" I think - based on the feedback from people saying how much they got out of these things, I don't think they "disliked" them.

One idea I've had is to have PM notifications from Meetings - so when Fred uploads a new shot to a meeting you attended, you get a PM with a link saying there's a new photo there.

In the last buddies challenge, I sent out 5PM's reminding people about the challenge - they'd all forgotten about it.

Backfired cause they all thought my shot was ****, but there you go Wink

I think people get into a routine and will always access and use the site in the same familiar way - probably the one that is easiest (to remember?) and each and every time they will follow the same route.

Just wonder if a special projects dropdown listing all these divertions, iniaitives, challenges and projects could be set up. Probably would need to be rationalised from time to time as things fell out of favour and new ideas got added. But maybe a sort of R & D section might be a useful billboard?

PM's are of course hugely powerful but I guess Pete you would be very reluctant to over use these but to give an idea such as this an initial shove would be excellent.

WRT the OP - I will post the upload numbers in teh forum in the next day or so an see what happens.

Cheers

Robert

I've been so short of time lately even epz has had to go on hold. I enjoyed both the crit & specialist groups but found once the rules for signing up changed to, 'only once you have an image' I didn't have the same commitment, whereas I entered anything I signed up for & made a special effort to find something different.

With the specialist group I missed the focus that the crit groups had with few people all trying to give constructive crit. Shame they fizzled out. (I was one of those who pmed anyone I thought might be interested.)

As Ade said they were overlooked by the vast majority and I think any initiative does require support from the top to let people know what is going on. I think the idea of a pm letting you know something has been added is a good idea especially once the initial enthusiasm wears off.

Maybe informal guidelines would be a better description.
We were asked not to join the crit Buddy Group until having an image to unload rather than join a group and upload before the end of the month.
There were very good reasons as some folk joined then forgot to upload or crit other group members, but on the other hand seeing no activity in the group understandably seemed to kill them off.
