The raw files should be in the native resolution and can't be adjusted in camera, unlike jpegs. More info required - what camera is it and what software are you using to download or open the files?

what you're seeing is the preview jpgs and not the raw files. It's possible with Nikon to strip them out seperately

PSP 7 cannot read RAW files, I think what you are looking at are the little jpeg files that are created at the same time for camera's LCD display.

I suggest you get yourself Raw Essentials to view and handle your RAW images becuase I don't think PSP7 can cope until you convert them to a TIF image after making corrections.

A RAW file is the raw information which has not been treated by the automatic programmes in the camera which happens when you use jpg or tif settings in the camera. So the settings you have on the camera which you use when shooting in jpg or tif are bypassed/ignored when you use the RAW option.

Yep...PS7 can strip the previews out and in some circumstances ruin the RAW file in the process

he said PSP not PS! Far superior programme but still cannot handle RAW I believe.

A couple of suggestions if you want to just browse the raw files at full res. without actually converting...

Viewraw A good raw viewer. Has a slide show feature - very useful for a quick look at your files before initial culling.

Preview Extractor. Extracts the embedded jpeg - not the small thumbnail but a full size jpeg. This is the jpeg that the camera creates if you select 'raw + jpeg' - it's still there in the file even if you don't choose this option in camera. This program will extract the jpegs from a whole folder of raw files in seconds. It doesn't do anything to the raw file except read the embedded jpeg.

    Both freebies.

i just downloaded rawshooter, the 2 .RAW files are now as i expected, full size, now i just need to play with it for a while and get a book so i know what i am doing, so far i am VERY impressed and can see .JPG being pushed to the wayside eventually, i am starting to see what people are saying about the versitality of a .RAW file, it seems to react differently to a .JPG. so is C1 much better than rawshooter and worth the extra cash, the write up on the advert says it's for professionals, maybe i can get away with rawshooter for my needs?

You can buy C1 LE which is a cut down of the C1 pro.

for me much better than Rawshooter.

and if you want a tutorial go to my portfolio and you will see a capture one tutorial that Keith has written.

will the tutorial give me any guidance for use in rawshooter? since i'd like to use that untill i get more familiar with .RAW.

What is the workflow with a .RAW file? do i alter it first then change it to a .TIFF or do the file type change first? i know NOTHING about .RAW at the moment so any advice is welcome.

Does C1 LE have curves and levels?

Yes as the settings are Simula

    Yes it does.

You can also get a thirty day free trial of C1 pro.

And a fifteen day trial of C1 LE.
so you will be able to compare them like for like.
