What size of RAW file can I expect from the Canon 5D?

If I need to interpolate for submission to Alamy (require uncompressed file size of 48MB minimum) what interpolation software can you recommend?

    Many thanks,

    Ian.

Approx 85MB as a 16 bit (TIFF) file. Half that for an 8 Bit file.

Photoshop is pretty much as good as any specialist software for up sizing (use the bicubic smother option).

Approx 74Mb @ 16 bit out of CaptureOne looking at the last few hundred shots I have processed.
Agree with photoshop for up sizing.

Thanks - can I do this with Elements 6 or do you mean the main program?

Well for a start Alamy will only accept 8-bit images. So you will be starting with a 37Mb TIFF.

Your can interpolate that absolutely fine with Photoshop Elements up to 48Mb.

You then save it as a JPEG after all that! Grin (Try level 12 although Alamy will accept as low as level 10).

Work in 16-bit, starting with a 72.something MB file (or whatever it is), upsize the longest side to around 5200 pixels (unless you want to clear the 48MB by a country mile and make it bigger), convert to 8-bit, convert to jpeg.

All of this can be done in very short time using the PS image processor, which will churn out jpegs straight from the 16-bit file.

i have a 5d and submit to alamy. once you have opened the raw image in photoshop go to image size and on the LONGEST SIDE change it to 5128 and save as level 12 jpeg. the photo will then meet both compressed and uncompressed requirements from alamy.

When opening a raw shot in cs3 cs2 at the bottom you will see size. Change this to 3413 by 5120 (17.5MP) +
This will give you exactly 50 meg files.
Remember to take sharpen to zero and dont sharpen at all for alamy at all. 5D are like a lot of other cameras a ******* for dust and alamy will bounce you back with the slightest spot.

oh yep same as discodavor said derrrrr

The bottom line really is that any of the recommended ways of upsizing are good enough for Alamy, bearing in mind that probably the majority of images will be used at editorial sizes anyway.

So if you have PS or a RAW converter that allows upsizing, GF is needless expense. It's reckoned to be marginally better at creating very large files, but 5D to A3 probably wouldn't merit it (and I used PS for my 10D recently when the 5D was at the cleaners - no problems with Alamy).

you are right. "but 5D to A3 probably wouldn't merit it" - can you please explain, I am a newbie.

If you've already got PS then there's no point in shelling out for GF as the difference in results for the sizes we're talking about aren't noticeable. I used to upsize my D70 files to Alamy spec using PSv7 with no problems.
