Does anybody remember the RED camera, you know the movie cam that can shoot 11MP @ 60FPS?

Well, it looks as though they're working on a modular still SLR/movie camera system as well.

Yeah, I saw that earlier today.
Looks incredibly unergonomic and unportable...

..and I thought the new Sony dSLR was ugly...it's a thing of beauty compared to that... Smile

Looks like it should say "Lego" on the side...

Did someone in the design department have some left over lego and meccano?

if this does turn out as is, then it's a quantum leap in the video/stills market. The video should be able to produce Hollywood grade footage.

Video too.

Quote:When they say "specifications and delivery dates are subject to drastic change" that leaves them a lot of leeway to produce nothing like what the pictures suggest. Vapourware?

They have already stormed the cinema market with their earlier products so this is unlikely to be vapourware.

The latest Red camera is projected to go on sale in Spring 2009.

The Red company decided on some changes of direction with its products earlier this year.

With the global financial crisis maybe there will be a sharp increase in the proportion of movies which are low budget?

Perhaps Red will be a company with the right products at the right time. Stranger things have happened1 Wink

Unless their stuff is tightly sewn up with patents! Wink

Quote:Ask yourself why Red can't keep their mouths shut about what they intend to produce whereas the big names indulge in secrecy and NDAs. It's as if they're trying to attract a mate..

Yes possibly. It's the sort of thing you might see on Dragons' Den! Grin

I think Red have been a bit silly about this - but it is part of their slight change in direction.

Still, we are told that over 4000 Red One cameras have been ordered. It is not quite clear how many have been delivered but it may be into four figures. Not too bad for such a small outfit.

But Red do have some competition in their own field: the Dalsa Origin and the Vision Research Phantom come to mind. I'm not really familiar with these, but I don't think they have as high a resolution as the Red.

261mp should keep the pixel peepers happy and the camera ahead of the canon G series for another year or two.
