I really wanted to go but couldn't get time off work! However I'd definately recommend meeting up with Paul if you can. He is a great laugh and an expert on all things surf and photography! How do I know this? Well I've seen the sand inside his van so he must be there a lot!

no surf as yet for the ripcurl comp but is building for end of the week and a small low coming in friday for good surf but probally poor weather !!! again like last year.
sat sees the freestyle motocross on fistral beach very good for photos as is the vert ramp running thursday to sunday

a white sigma ,I still wouldnt buy one , i may buy thier wideangle as I like sigma wides but not the telephoto zooms
I should think you'll get some good shots, although might have to crop a bit. I'm sure Paul used to use 400mm before he got the 600mm. But its not just surfing! Bikes/Skates/Music/Models beach life, plus Radio One will be there on Friday, Jo Whiley presenting with James Blunt playing live.

Have you been to the event before,yourself.
I was wondering if it's possible and easy enough to get close enough to the action (all events) being just a member of the public,as opposed to an official photographer with perhaps better access.

Sorry Justin but no never been. I'm just going on what Paul was telling me, when I worked for him. Plus if I was going he was going to blag me a press pass! I'm sure if he and you knew when you were both going to be there that he'd help you out. You can't miss him, big tall northern bloke with Canon 1D and 600mm Lens with EX stickers.
the skate ramps work better wiith a wide angle, surf can be got with a 400mm as a lot of the action is lcose in to the shore with action occurring in the beach break,
the music is at wategate not fistral , still trying to blag press passes for me and my photographers.
the freestyle mx looks good with a mid range zoom or even better from where I will be if I get there on sat on top of the wagon with a 15mm wide angle shockingly close but fun!!!!
all the boys are saying the surfs coming weds and going to be good, by weekend it will go again
the nuts bkini contest wideangle and get to the front of us press guys elbows ready pushing and shoving all takes place
