I find your comment difficult to believe for two reasons. I was in the TA in the 1960s - 70s, and I never heard that officers had to buy their own firearms. All firearms that were part of uniform or to be used were located in the Armoury and were distributed only when you went to the ranges. Arms were never issued willy nilly. Secondly, if they had to buy their own firearms they would have had to hold a licence and no firearms supplier would have left any gun on any doorstep - in fact if it ever happened they would have to collect it.
