and the Band Played Waltzing Matilda by Eric Bogle. The best recording I've heard is by June Tabor - always brings a lump to the throat!

The Carnival Is Over by the Seekers

It was quite a popular song which they sang at the end of their concerts but I remember it from the farewell concert at the BBC in London July 7 1968.

Even without playing it ( I have it in my itunes collection ) I can hear Judith Durham's voice and I now have to go get a tissue to wipe my eyes ! !

PS
Another one is Nana Mouskouri singing The White Rose Of Athens in her native tongue ( clue is in the title )

I have to put this in context; our nephew, 20 years of age, suffered with Cystic Fibrosis, he passed away 2 weeks ago. When he was 16 he told his mother he wanted this song played at his funeral.

A song i heard played on Radio 2 Pick of the Pops on Saturday - had never heard it before - 3 Stars by Ruby Wright. It was written as a tribute after the untimely deaths of Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper & Richie Valance. Really made the hairs on my neck prickle and brought tears to my eyes!

I can also relate to The Carnival is Over - was brought up on music of The Seekers - mum & dad loved them!
