What is your recommended method for this? I currently use Highpass filter in layers, but is there another, simpler but effective method?

What do you think of the smart sharpen feature. Not an expert but I have been playing with it and it looks to work well.

Does that work in layers? Must admit I have never used it as I always use USM to sharpen the whole image as a final step before saving/uploading.

I think it does, I would have to experiment I am tending to use it in preference to USM and I sharpen as the last step.

You could sharpen the whole picture then using a mask delete areas you don't want sharpened. I usually use USM, unless there are lots of straight lines when I use HP.

True, Chris....what are the advantages of using HP when there are lots of straight lines? Is it just beacause of the regular shapes that make it easier to use the brush tool?

In CS5 I didn't find much difference between USM and SS so I tend to stick to the former - but using the sharpening brush very selectively.

I don't know if they've improved SS in CS6, to which I have just switched. Perhaps worth experimenting again.

I find smart sharpen tens to leave out of focus areas alone, but I have not used it enough to say that for definite.
