Had a go in Painshoppro 7
Process very simple,
- increase colour depth
- stretch contrast
- convert to greyscale
- adjust brightness / contrast (not a lot, really)
No masking, dodging, burning - doesn't seem right somehow....

but real trouble resizing - the curved tramlines come out squiggly (technical term) whatever method I use - and the same problem shows up here on Epz's resizing, I've just noticed on the preview.

Increased brightness (48 out of 255), contrast 7%,
Increased sharpnes (standard from photo menu)
Convert to greyscale.

I just found this exercise, it was a good idea! I have added a modification!
