Hi....I'm looking to shoot in raw format.
I'm unsure / undecided and lacking confidence, but it's got to be done.

    I have a D80 and Photoshop elements 5.
I downloaded free "Rawshooter" but it doesn't work at all.

I'm looking at Nikon Capture NX...is this what I need ?
...Is it the easiest and most suitable for my needs ?

    ...Please...simple language....no techy stuff.

    regards....Mike

Mike download Capture One v4 - there's a free 30 day trial. I think you'll find this much quicker than NX, which I just find frustrating.

    Capture One

Other people do like NX, but personally there are some nice features but I prefer C1

This explains it but basically you can control areas of the image without having to use masks and the like

The control points would be the bit I would refer to as good in NX.

It all comes dwn to personal preference. Now if someone could combine the processing speed of C1, The library functions of LR and the control points of NX I think they'd have a winner Smile

If they did Cheryl, Adobe would buy it over and integrate it into Lightroom in a way that made it worse than the original program...

Bring back Rawshooter. Wish someone would update this on the sly and put the new camera profiles in :-(

I'm right with Cheryl on this one, Capture NX's Control points, Are the single most interesting feature in that program........IF only the rest of the program was not like treading through treacle.....And unless you have some serious computing power, Your gonna find it slow, Very slow.....Sad

    Capture 1 ( LE ) as a raw & batch convertor takes some beating........Enough said...Smile

Capture 1 (4) latest.....I can't say as I have not tried it........According to mentions on previous forums.....It has some great features, A new interface, But users of Cap 1 ( LE ) had some niggles with some of the changes......Sad

Adobe Lightroom........My first impressions where not favourable........BUT this really came down to the interface, It really does take some getting used to, I'm glad I persisted as that and the newer release Version 1.3, Has paid off...Smile

Lightroom is probably the most complete package from those mentioned, It has evolved and continues to do so, Ok! there are some little niggles......But mostly personal preferances..!

Looking ahead expect Adobes Lightroom to improve further, Capture 1 (4) ? Well if Phase One listen to thier customers, And make the changes liked by many from Cap 1 ( 3.77 ) Then there is no doubt it will be a strong contender.

Nikons Capture NX...? Unless they get the speed thing sorted, And do something sensible with the tools & Interface....! Who knows.

Just a Note on Rawshooter.....The Camera raw engine in Rawshooter.....was good for up to and including the Nikon D200.........Any brands or models realeased after that will not have been included in the RAW engine component.....!
Ask Adobe......They bought out Rawshooter...And maybe this is where Lightroom gets it's speed from........Smile

Above comments are just my own personal findings from using the above for some time....!

IF I had to look at the current market as of today, It would be a close run thing between Adobe Lightroom & Capture 1 ....!

    EDIT;

    Quote: Bring back Rawshooter

Well no harm in wishing, Agree Rawshooter really had serious potential, Guess thats why Adobe gobbled it up......Sad

Yeh Adobe bought rawshooter as it was a better engine than they had. Also the Essentials version was free.

If Rawshooter team had kept on as they where, I dont think Lightroom would made any money lol.

I like Lightroom to a point but still prefer to this day the power and ease of use of Rawshooter (having a D200 it still works for me).

    Hi Mike,

I purchased NX a while ago and in my opinion it was the best £120 I have ever spent on software. Very powerful package when you get used to it and I am still getting used to everything it is capable of doing. The only downside is that it has no cloning facility to alow removal of dust marks etc. I usually do all adjustment in NX, then import into CS3 to clone out any dust spot and apply a little sharpening. As someone has already said early the control points are a superb method to allow selective adjustment to any area of the image.

If you get NX, you will not be dissapointed IMHO.

Thanks everyone...I downloaded Capture 1 as suggested and spent all afternoon trying to make some sense of it...I just got more and more frustrated, just did not know what to do.
    ...thanks though Cheryl

    Hi Brian
Elements 5 can only open raw files from certain cameras.
....don't think D80 is one of them.

Hi Roger...difficult to put into words but if I buy NX will it be reasonably obvious what I am supposed to do ?
Were you guys born with the ability to handle this stuff ?

    Gotta have a rethink.

    thanks again all.....Mike

    Mike ,

I am quite happy to give some tuition in Capture 1 if you wish, it's quite easy once you get used to it and probably the most effective overall , it is the industry preference for Raw conversion, Don't buy anything just yet until you have practiced with the trial versions!!!

    Cheers Mike
