Does anyone if the shutter button can be silenced when operated?

There are some techniques that can be used with mirror lock up or live view to minimise the noise but unlike cameraphones which fake the sound the parts in your camera are actually making a noise.

I'm not sure about the D300 but in the D300S you can use the "Quiet Shutter Release" mode.

Rotate the release mode dial until you get to the letter "Q" . It's not silent but is definitely quieter than the normal release mode.

No it can't - I have a D300 and even with the 'mirror up' setting it's a noisy beast.

Thanks for your comments. Using Live View is even worse! You have to use the shutter to activate LV and then again to take the shot. So it sounds like you've taken two shots. Yhanks again.

People who use that method at weddings, eg during a quiet ceremony, switch to Live View in advance. Many Canons have had the feature since the 40D.
