At a guess they are trying the old idea that by making something look cheaper by price, It also gets viewed as inferior.....![]()
So bung the price up way over the opposition, Then maybe the opposite will happen....![]()
That said a good old fashioned " Shoot Out " done by our very own reviewers might show us the facts.....!!!

Sigma are bringing out a new 105mm macro OS as well at some point and their 150mm OS is just on the market. It might be that the older version of the lens is climbing in price as stock dwindles as Sigma focus on manufacture of the new version - in addition the new 105mm OS would be expected to hit the market at inflated prices for a while until its price lowers and settles
There may be an element of covering possible litigation costs.

thats the one my first post is about. ![]()
For what its worth
I have a 105 2.8 Nikkor which I could afford, and I also wanted a 70-200 2.8 but as an amateur could not justify the £1100 at the time (the new one is £1600) so I bought the Sigma 70-200.
I know they are different types of lens but I find the autofocus just as good as one another and they are both very sharp, well above the resolution of my Nikon D200.
IMHO The way I see it unless you are a pro or very talented amateur the high end Sigma's are more than adequate.
Dave
The Nikon lens is a real snip when you compare it with the Zeiss 100mm. We have both: I prefer the Zeiss because it's a lot sharper and She-who-must-be-obeyed prefers the Nikon because it has auto-focus.

they would want to be absolutly astounding if they are charging more than the Nikkor version!!
and i have to disagree with the comment about the sigma being as good.... i bought the 70-200 sigma, and hardly use it as i dont trust it to give me consistently good shots... in fact i dont trust it to give me ANY good shots.... compared to the Nikon 70-200, the sigma version is just a toy.
It really depends about which Sigma's you're talking about, its very hard to generalise the whole line as either better or worse. I've seen results comparing sigmas 500-800mm against canons 800mm L which showed the L as equal to or even a hair worse; I've seen sigma macro lenses stand up brilliantly against the best from Canon - similarly I know that the 70-200mm range is debatable, but full of generalisations since people say "70-200mm" but don't specify which ones they are comparing (eg comparing the cheaper sigma top range 70-200mm against canons new, higher priced 70-200mm MII and the canon wins easily)
As a long-term proposition, you'll find that Nikon lenses generally hold their value better than the indies. The higher-end Nikon kit is also built to last.
Auto-focus is all but useless for close-up, so why not consider a manual-focus Minon 105 Micro and Ffordes will probably have several to choose between. Ffordes are very strict with grading so anything above Exc+ will satisfy most people.

I already have the Nikkor 105mm micro.... i was just looking through WE and noticed the price change. and wondered why.
Apologies for the typo: I meant Nikon rather than Minon.
A high price is one good way to convince the punters that a product is high quality.

From a business perspective, a very short term way. Too many forums and magazine and user reviews for that to wash for long.
More likely that, like Adobe, they consider the UK to be Treasure Island and know that many Brits prefer to boast how much they paid for something rather than how little.
