Peter Bargh put some info on here about creating a silhouette. Forgive me, but I'm not not a photographer, though I have worked with many snappers in news media. I would like to understand how to create a silhouette for a poster I am charged with creating for an am-dram group where I live in France. Peter's info is helpful, but I do not understand the term threshold and how I can access it. I have a standard laptop running Vitsa/ Windows. I am in a panic as I said I could do this job this week. Can someone hand-hold me on this occasion.

Are you taking the photo, or do you have a photo that you are trying to create a silhouette from?

If taking a photo, the usual method is to find somewhere that the background is brighter than the subject and meter off the background. As you say you are not a photographer, I suspect you have a pic you need to convert - try uploading to your portfolio and someone may be able to describe the best method in a comment.

Threshold is an adjustment in Photoshop ( probably in Adobe Elements ).

Access it via the top menu bar - Image ➪ Adjust ➪ Threshold

It turns the image to black & white - removing all tones in between.

You need an image to start with.

Hi StuartAt and mnad-dogs - I have the image downloaded from the internet, thought I'd added it as an attachment, but hey-ho. I was searching in Windows for the Threshold element, so thanks that it is in Photoshop (which I assume Peter B assumed people would know) , which I don't have, so it looks like I am stuck.

Image here. I have changed colour background from the grey/black it was. There is stuff I can do in OpenOffice.org, Drawing, but can't seem to manage silhouette, though can adjust hues etc.
