I got a 430EX yesterday, to use as a slave, with my 550EX the master.
Just testing them in the front room, and the slave seems to fire a good half-second after the master does. That's not really ideal, unless I'm using a slow enough shutter speed (which is unlikely).
What am I doing wrong? I've 'RTFM', but can find nothing that identifies the cause of what I consider a significant delay. It might be that I'm being stupid (in fact, that's quite likely!), but does anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like you were using the test button - my 580 EXII and Sigma 500 do the same
Try it for real - I think you'll find it works correctly then
You were spot on, and should go straight to the top of the class. I was using the test button for the test (as you would )
Worked fine when I actually used them for real.
So you posted this query in the forum before you'd actually attempted to take a shot.
