When was the last time you defragged the drive ??
There's an inbuilt defrag if you haven't ( and I suspect you haven't) I'd could take a considerable amount of time (upto 24 hours). I actually use defraggle.
After that ccleaner (well do that first- it will clear temp files, recycle bin get rid of missing links etc), antivirus/malware etc as mentioned above, delete any c**p
Most times it worth backing up anything you want to keep then doing a full reinstall.
I do this on my works computers and home computers every now and then and they run like new again.
Either use the disks supplied or there should be an option to return it to factory settings via Control panel or boot menu. It takes about an hour or less, once you have backed up anything you want to keep.
may be of help
Quote: It takes about an hour or less,
not sure about that never less than 3-4 hours start to finish excluding backing up of data
dont forget you need to do update as well
I'm going on my own personal experience, I did my laptop only 2 days ago and it took less than an hour including updates

YOU FORGOT.... malwarebytes, spybot, hijackthis firefox, chrome, sound plugins, java, flash adobe reader (or acrobat)
TO DO a proper job it has to be 3/4 hours NOT full time but to be there! I have been doing PC's since 286's on mac's before (in the dark ages well thatchers dark ages!)
goaty: you are a speedy genius! hopw much do you charge?
Windows 7 does take less than an hour to install fact, I've done it several times. Your own install of other programs WILL take longer obviously. Jeeez it's like talking to kids sometimes or old buggers who know best
The smiley is because I'm not having a go just a friendly bite.
Oh and I charge by the beer ![]()
So the end result is anything from about an hour to a day depending if you want to use it or not.
But going back to what was asked in the first post, only real way to get any short lived speed out of windows (2 through 7 and soon 8) is a fresh install, just thought of new name for windows is food only fresh /great etc. for a short while then you need to get more.Owned the dark side for a while had to sell for finical reasons but never noticed if it got slower on a daily basis .
Sorry got to go need to start the long process of backup and reinstall
Can't wait
cos I am OLD (some of the hills are younger than me!) and done it more times than I would really like to remember!
I found that in its the "updates" which are the bits that slows the PC AND A BIG registry!
I can understand that a fresh install IS nice BUT unless you install with a latest "up to date" DVD
any fresh, with an old dvd is going to be patched or updated = slows again!
mmm I think that broadband is ONLY used now for updating HE HE
this is the blinder with linux no major rebuilding all yer data stays intact in a ring fenced dir and you get a NEW install not updated / patched "muckysoft" bodged update with a rusty nail and a bandage!
I have found that if you get a version of win 7 (and are happy with it? it is good now)
TURN off ALL the updates, just install the "tuesday" security stuff.
ps. I still have lots of happy XP business users!
so if it still works DONT FIX IT......
Ps Answer to question:
for a 1 off...... 4 hours is a good time to aim for all up inc sw etc. & finished
it's better IF you have a batch to do cos you have no wait time, if you do a lot, of install, build an unattended install disc with all the apps on it!
