I have a SONY A55, and a SONY 2.8-100 Macro lens.....I acquired a Ring Flash off eBay......I soon resold it, because it only gave very fiat results............Ring flashes are good for jewelry and small items, but not tiny insects, bugs, spiders and plants.

If you intend to shoot insects etc with your macro, then go down the DIY flash diffuser route, there are many examples of his to make them on YouTube.

Mine has been developed from a cheap, six inch opaque lidded plastic basin from Wilko's......just carefully cut a trap door in the base, to fit around your Speedlight, line the upper quadrant with cooking foil as a reflector, and place a circle of whit kitchen towel inside the lid as a diffuser and away you go.

Camera settings for good results with this set up?

F11-16 ......Shutter 160th.....Flash EV to suit ambient light.
