I am taking pictures of golfers with a canon 300d and a sigma 170-500mm lense
if the weather conditions are good what setting should i use on the camera. I have been told to use the AV setting and this will automatically set the shutter speed, but never seems to be fast enough and there are lots of blurs. As a backup i have used the sports mode to but 99% of the time it take a dark photo and i need to colour correct it in photoshop, which you should want to do too much as you loose quality.
can anyone help me with this problem
I have used manual before on the course, which works well, Setting the ISO to the lighting conditions and the speed of who i am shooting, then using the light meter on the camera to select the shutter speed. But i have been told before that i shuld be using the AV which i can never seem to get the hang of
When shooting sport I use AV to set the apature (normally wide open) then set the ISO to get the required shutter speed. I.E. if the speed drops below the acceptable then raise the ISO. I do this as I useded to use TV but if the light drops below the min aperture then the image will under expose which is bad especially if using high ISO. I have got more keepers this way. If the light is bright and not changeable and you have a fast lens then TV may be the better option.

i never seem to get the shutter speed over 1/1000 when using AV mode, unless i put the ISO up to 1600 which gives a grain look.
TV and AV just pick the shutter or apature to go with whats set. If using your largest apature it meters at 1/1000 then on TV at a 1/1000 it should pick your widest apature (e.g. f5.6 and 1/1000). If you set a higher speed you will under expose. This is the issue I refered to. As ther is less detail captured in the dark tones it will appear more grainy and if at high ISO even more so. Due to this I have found I get more keepers using AV as if the light drops it will still be correctly exposed just maybe to slow a shutter to get the image you require.
cheers

Quote: How do i find out what AV setting i am using?
If you have the mode dial set to Av you are in Av, then the viewfinder shows the aperture value, shutter speed and compensation you have set. The 300D only has the one Av mode.
I tend to stick in Av and just watch what shutter speed you get. For sport you often want a shallow depth of field so I set it to wide open and just check the shutter speed is high enough. If you are hand holding this lens go for over 1/1000 at its long end.
i am using a sigma 170-500mm f5-6.3 on a monopod. I am sure in the past when i set the aperature to the lowest (5) the shutter speed never gets anywhere near 1/1000. Am i doing something obviously wrong?
Do you understand the balance between ISO, shutter speed and aperture? If not try reading this .
Basicaly its a mixture of the available light etc, but upping the ISO should help you.
