The BBC today reports on automated driving style behaviour tracking - a black box that transmits when you are and how fast you drive etc.
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16969509

You may get cheaper insurance, or a stern email saying slow down.

    What do you think?

I had to brake really hard to avoid someone coming out of a car park onto a main road when they should have waited, that would lead to me getting a stern email from AA? I think the idea is good, if it reduces premiums for safer drivers but its not foolproof is it?

Still think the old system was the best though, the one where a policeman would pull you up for doing something wrong. I nearly got knocked over by a cyclist yesterday, he was going the wrong way down a one way street in full view of a policeman (who did nothing).

I'm all for it if the accident free drivers get a better deal.
But what about the element that don't have and don't intend getting insurance? We must have an effective way of dealing with them.

Military 'white-fleet' leased vehicles have had these boxes for a while now. They show a red light if you are abusing the vehicle by accelerating too fast, braking too hard or cornering too aggressively. They can download the data to analyse and then have a quiet word with you if you have transgressed! They have actually proved very useful in the event of an accident as you can prove that you were taking defensive actions to avoid the collision.

Our experience of them are the one's in our pool cars are far too sensative, even with 'normal' driving, the red light just flashes like mad. Even 'dulling' down your driving style ends up with a flashing red light when cornering and accelerating. We have started to cover the light because it's very distracting and in our opinion could cause an accident from paying too much attension to the LED instead of the road. The good points are pretty obvious, ask the lad who was asked to explain why he was driving at 95mph!

all the signs of big brother moving in, how long before car manufacturers have to put these in mandatory. " a new health and safety regulation" of which im sure the police and councils in the yrs to come will start sending you speeding fines through the post. " the black box doesnt lie"
on the other hand its a good thing to monitor NUMPTY drivers who couldnt care less and treat the roads like a race track.

now what they SHOULD DO is fix one of these to a compulsive law breaker (on the roads) so they can deactivate the car if its being used by a numpty. for instance.... to get the car going it has to be activated by the owners voice......there by if someone "lends the car" to someone its STILL theyre fault..
mark me here, it truly wont be many years before the fines start kicking in........

I would sign up for this and then employ an army of nerds to design a device that sits next to it sending everything the AA needed to see rather than the stuff I actually did.Tongue

Nearly right - the first move should be to crush the car. Whether or not the driver is given the opportunity to get out first is open to debate Wink

On the one hand I'd add a video and an upload button for also uploading the atrocious driving of the car in front of me.

On the other hand I wait for the day when the police go through the last months driving of every subscriber and give them 3 penalty points for each infringement - have you ever exceeded the speed limit more than 4 times in a month?

We would all be banned and only the cars with no insurance would be left on the road; Then we would then not need ANPR - just stop every car and nick them for stolen number plates and no insurance.

Then we could all travel by horse.

Appalled! More nanny state. It will become compulsory, no doubt.

My brother lives in LA and drives with a small camcorder (the sort you see advertised for recording adventurous sports) on his dash which is permanently recording. This is for evidential purposes should he need it. Quite a common thing apparently!
