Good Morning Everyone,
Can anyone help with advice on studio lighting kits.
I was going to get an SB900 but see you can get a kit for around the same price!!!
With a kit i can have some fun doing some family portraits and leave the on camera flash alone for a while.
And maybe buy a cheaper gun later.
Horses for courses ... a flash gun is portable and self contained ... a studio lighting kit is not quite so portable and will require some sort of external power source. If you feel that you will spend more time taking family portraits in an indoor "studio" environment then the kit is the way to go ... but if mobility is the key then a flashgun is probably better.
Just my thoughts...
most kits come with umbrellas ,waste of time for good light you need a softbox or beautydish, most of my studio work is done with one light so if i could i would sell all my studio lights and go for the more 900 great light, but lights are personal i do weddings and studio so for me the ease to use of the 900 out weigh ac powered lights and still get same results might have to think a bit more on setup

Or a shoot through brolly.....![]()
That said, Check this site out, It might change your mind....![]()
I've got the Elemental G250 two head kit + extras. There is at least one review floating around on the net. I will also post a review in the next few days (week). I have also used the Elemetnal M series, which I have reviewed.
I did have 2 Sigma flashes for off camera flash, and I can tell you it will be much easier using studio flash. Especially when you calculate the light modifier into the cost.
I bought a couple of speedlights last year, having no experience with lighting. Having no lighting experience, I found it quite frustrating trying to get good (and consistent) results from them - very hit and miss if you don't know what you're doing, especially with the lack of modelling lamps. I've just sold one of the speedlights and a got a second-hand pair of D-lights instead - probably learnt more using them over the past week than over the previous year.
I'd definitely go with the kit considering what you can get for the same money - if you later get to a stage where you're confident with what you're doing and want the extra portability, being able to shoot outside etc, I'd say get some speedlights at that point. Another thing I found is that speedlights aren't that portable anyway if you're going to be using them with a softbox, stand, etc.
Thank you very much to all that replied this is a great site just for this alone as well as all the other great stuff.
With regard to kits does anyone recommend any particular one?
I probably will still get the SB900 in the new year a well as i hope to do a few weddings.
Cheers all have a great chrimbo.
I have the Lastolite Lumen8 400w, three head kit and am very happy with it. Someone will, no doubt, recommend a kit from Elemental too, though I have no experience. The owner is a member of EPZ - many members have bought from him and highly recommend the kit and the service.
